Local exposure to refugees changed attitudes to ethnic minorities in the Netherlands
We investigate the effect of exposure to refugees on locals’ preferences with regard to ethnic minorities using individual-level panel data from the Netherlands. The data combine self-reported preferences with administrative data on the residential locations of the locals and the refugees. Return on Trust is Lower for Immigrants
We conducted an experiment with a representative sample of the Dutch population to study whether trustworthiness depends on the ethnicity of the interaction partner. Native Dutch trustees play with an anonymous trustor, who is either another native Dutch or a non-Western immigrant. We find that trustees reciprocate trust up to 12% less if the trustor is a non-Western immigrant than if he/she is native Dutch. This percentage increases up to 23% fo…
Labour Supply Effects of Winning a Lottery
Our article investigates how winning a substantial lottery prize affects labour supply. Analysing data from Dutch State Lottery winners, we find that winning a lottery prize reduces labour earnings in the year of the winning, as well as in the years after the winning. This suggests that winning a lottery prize makes one work fewer hours. The effects are small but statistically significant. We do not find a significant effect of lottery prizes on …

In this article, the authors measure experienced guilt in a prisoner's-dilemma experiment with preplay communication. The authors find that feelings of guilt only arise in the case of unilateral defection and that they are stronger when players have mutually agreed to cooperate.
