  • Ottonian Germany

David A Warner, David Warner et al.•BOOK•Ottonian Germany•2013

The Chronicon of Thietmar of Merseburg has long been recognised as one of the most important sources for the history of the tenth and early eleventh centuries, especially for the history of the Ottonian Empire. Although there is sufficient evidence of continuity between the Ottonians and the early Salians to justify a long Ottonian period extending at least to 1056, it is the Ottonians alone who defined the mental landscape of Bishop Thietmar of …

  • Rituals, Kingship and Rebellion in Medieval Germany

    Open Access•David A Warner•ARTICLE•History Compass•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This essay attempts to place the current interest in medieval rituals in historical perspective, tracing the evolution of scholarly viewpoints from the age of Ranke to the present day. It chiefly focuses on Germany and on the tenth and early eleventh centuries, a classic period in the development of German kingship and ritual, but also a period marked by numerous uprisings against kings. The essay argues that the relevant historiography can rough…

  • Ideals and action in the reign of Otto III

    David A Warner•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•1999•Cited by: 3

This article examines one of the most controversial aspects of Otto III's reign, his plan to create a revived Roman Empire with the city of Rome as its centre. More than sixty years ago the largely literary, visual, and symbolic evidence for this Renovatio imperii Romanorum was assembled and examined by P.E.Schramm. His pioneering study then became the basis for virtually all subsequent work on the subject. Recent literature has brought the liter…

  • Thietmar of Merseburg on Rituals of Kingship

    David A Warner•ARTICLE•Viator•1995

"Thietmar of Merseburg on Rituals of Kingship." This study confronts a longstanding tendency to interpret the rituals of Ottonian kings exclusively as a means to represent theories of monarchy and to treat them as manifestations of a coherent system. Expanding on research pertaining to rites of submission or surrender, Warner argues that Ottonian views on the subject of ritual were not as systematic as they sometimes appear to be in modern studie…
