  • Eugenio Coseriu: Past, Present and Future

Walter de Gruyter GmbH &amp Co KG, Klaas Willems et al.•BOOK•Eugenio Coseriu•2021

The volume is published on the occasion of the birth centennial of Eugenio Coseriu (1921–2002). It is the first collective volume to appear in English in which various scholars present a variety of perspectives on Coseriu’s scholarly work and discuss its continuing relevance for the language sciences. Coseriu’s international reputation has suffered from his commitment to publish in languages such as Spanish, German, French, Italian, Romanian and …

  • Form, meaning, and reference in natural language: A phenomenological account of proper names

    Open Access•Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Diacronia•2020

In my book Eigenname und Bedeutung (1996), I started from the observation that modern theories of proper names fail to do justice to the specific and complex semantic nature of proper names. Since the 1960’s and 1970’s, theorizing about proper names has been dominated largely by scholars working in the traditions of analytic philosophy and logic, in particular John R. Searle and Saul Kripke. I argued, however, that the highly specific kind of mea…

  • Formă, semnificație și referință în limba naturală. O dare de seamă fenomenologică asupra numelor proprii

    Open Access•Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Diacronia•2020

This article presents a corpus-based investigation of the factors that co-vary in contemporary written German with the use of nominal word formations and syntagms construed with super, such as Superteam and super Team. The alternating constructions Super-N and super + N are studied on the basis of a statistical analysis with regard to six variables which capture semantic, etymological, text-linguistic and morphosyntactic features of both construc…

  • Wortstellungsvariation und Konstruktionsverschmelzung

    Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Deutsche Sprache•2015

There are certain constraints on extracting prepositional phrases from noun phrases, in German as well as in many other languages; compare: Über dieses Thema schreibt sie ihre Hausarbeit; Über den Zweiten Weltkrieg hat er viele Bücher gelesen, but: *Über Magie haben sie alle Bücher vernichtet (Alle Bücher über Magie haben sie vernichtet), ??Über die Liebe möchte er ein Buch bestellen (Ein Buch über die Liebe möchte er bestellen). The extraction o…

  • The linguistic sign at the lexicon-syntax interface: Assumptions and implications of the Generative Lexicon Theory

    Open Access•Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

This article explores the basic assumptions of Generative Lexicon Theory (GL) and the implications for the general theory of the linguistic sign that arise from the generative mechanisms “selective binding,” “co-composition,” and “type coercion.” The article focuses on the assumption underlying GL that interpretation and polysemy are part of lexical structure. It is shown that encoded lexical meaning and inferred non-lexical knowledge cannot be c…

  • Kasuserwerb in der Präpositionalphrase vom Standpunkt der Verarbeitbarkeitstheorie (Processability Theory)

  • The semantics of variable case marking (Accusative/Dative) after two-way prepositions in German locative constructions. Towards a constructionist approach

    Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2011

Article The semantics of variable case marking (Accusative/Dative) after two-way prepositions in German locative constructions. Towards a constructionist approach was published on December 14, 2011 in the journal Indogermanische Forschungen (volume 116, issue 2011).

  • Essen oder fressen? Eine Fallstudie zum Verhältnis von Korpusdaten und Intuition in der lexikalischen Semantik

    Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Deutsche Sprache•2011

The last two decades have witnessed an upsurge of interest in the link between theoretical linguistics and the different types of linguistic evidence that can be brought to bear in linguistic analysis (introspection, corpus data, experimental data, data from language acquisition, sociolinguistic data, historical data, etc.). In this article, the difference between introspection and intuition in lexical semantics is discussed against the backgroun…

  • Meaning and interpretation: The semiotic similarities and differences between Cognitive Grammar and European structural linguistics

    Open Access•Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 18

The theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the cognitive paradigm have traditionally been discussed against the background of generative grammar, its immediate predecessor. A significantly less researched yet no less interesting relationship is the one between the cognitive and structuralist paradigm. This article focuses on the in part converging, in part diverging semiotic assumptions underlying European structural linguistics and Cogn…

  • Fred or farīd, bacon or bayḍun (‘egg’)? Proper Names and Cultural-specific Items in the Arabic Translation of Harry Potter

    Open Access•Erika Mussche, Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2010•References: 25

This paper investigates the transfer of proper names and references to food in the Arabic translation of the first three Harry Potter volumes. The focus of the study is twofold: (1) What is the relation between the different transfer procedures employed in the translation process and the formal, semantic and cultural properties of the source text material? And (2) what is the effect of the applied procedures on the textual and stylistic features …

  • Indeterminiertheit, Valenzvariation und Verbbedeutung vom Gesichtspunkt der funktionellen Syntax / Indeterminateness, valency variation and verb meaning from a functional syntax perspective

    Klaas Willems•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2006

This paper deals with the problem of how inherent verb meanings are to be assessed in a synchronic theory of verb valency, given that verbs usually occur in different syntactic patterns and display considerable semantic variation. Moreover, in a recent paper, Fischer (2003) claims that valency is essentially “indeterminate”, because the way verbs build up constructions is subject to various interpretations by different speakers. In the present pa…
