A geometric morphometric approach to the study of variation of shovel‐shaped incisors
OBJECTIVES: The scoring and analysis of dental nonmetric traits are predominantly accomplished by using the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS), a standard protocol based on strict definitions and three-dimensional dental plaques. However, visual scoring, even when controlled by strict definitions of features, visual reference, and the experience of the observer, includes an unavoidable part of subjectivity. In this metho…
The endocast of StW 573 ("Little Foot") and hominin brain evolution
Cortical bone distribution in the femoral neck of Paranthropus robustus
Efficacy of diffeomorphic surface matching and 3D geometric morphometrics for taxonomic discrimination of Early Pleistocene hominin mandibular molars
"The bony labyrinth of StW 573 ("Little Foot): Implications for early hominin evolution and paleobiology
Cranial vault thickness variation and inner structural organization in the StW 578 hominin cranium from Jacovec Cavern, South Africa
Intra‐individual metameric variation expressed at the enamel‐dentine junction of lower post‐canine dentition of South African fossil hominins and modern humans
The distalward increase of metameric variation along the modern human molar row is consistent with the odontogenetic models of molar row structure (inhibitory cascade model). Though much remains to be tested, the variable trends and magnitudes in metamerism in fossil hominins reported here, together with differences in the scale of shape change between modern humans and fossil hominins may provide valuable information regarding functional morphol…
Neutron microtomography‐based virtual extraction and analysis of a cercopithecoid partial cranium ( STS 1039) embedded in a breccia fragment from sterkfontein member 4 (South Africa)
The Plio‐Pleistocene karstic sedimentary deposits of Sterkfontein Cave, South Africa, yielded numerous fossil primate specimens embedded in blocks of indurated breccia, including the partial cercopithecoid cranium labelled STS 1039. Because the surrounding matrix masks most of its morphology, the specimen remains taxonomically undetermined. While the use of X‐ray microtomography did not allow extracting any structural information about the specim…
Morphoarchitectural variation in South African fossil cercopithecoid endocasts
Further morphological evidence on South African earliest Homo lower postcanine dentition: Enamel thickness and enamel dentine junction
Upper third molar internal structural organization and semicircular canal morphology in Plio-Pleistocene South African cercopithecoids
Verifying the potential of micro-focus X-ray computed tomography in the study of ancient bone tool function
Neutron Tomographic Assessment of Incisions on Prehistoric Stone Slabs: A Case Study From Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa
This study presents the application of neutron tomography to the analysis of ironstone slabs found in a late Earlier Stone Age context (Fauresmith industry) at the back of Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. These slabs have markings on the surface that might be anthropogenic, and thus significant to understanding the emergence of human symbolic behaviour. Neutron tomography proved to be an effective tool for distinguishing sur…
