Soundtracks of human mimetic sexual play
This article presents and discusses the sonic aspects of human sexual play, focusing on soundtracks and sonic scripts related to sexual “faking”. The author’s ethnographic archives are used to exemplify these complicated mimetic sounds, as they travel and bounce within the sonic nexus of pornography and everyday human sexuality beyond porn. Recognizably regional East Asian vocalizations are used to showcase subtle relations between sonic enactmen…
O položaju organske neizgrađene prirode u poetici i ideologiji istočnojadranskog futurizma
The article offers an overview of lesser-known aspects of the Eastern Adriatic futuristic avant-garde in a broader sense: both the futuristic movement itself and the phenomena that relied on it in conventional interpretations. Selected episodes relate to the examination of the futuristic relationship to the organic unbuilt nature. Emphasis is placed on the comparative image of this multicultural and multilingual literary region, beyond national h…
Aleksandar Mijatović, Temporalities of Post-Yugoslav Literature
One doesn’t always have a pleasure of reading about Yugoslav topics in English without the persistent shadow of the old next-to-colonial gaze that oversimplifies and reduces, or the one that seeks to be superficially likable or exotic, or, diversely, of one that is rhetorically and performatively (rather than analytically) “erudite”, trying to excel in “his master’s voice” (hegemonic). Productively standing against all of these traps, Aleksandar …
Korean Cuties
Aegyo (performed winsomeness) is a layered articulation of behaviours, gestures, vocal and linguistic adjustments, narratives and fashions that serve to enact child-like charm and infantilised cuteness. It is a widely debated but poorly studied phenomenon observed especially among younger South Korean women and, more seldomly, among men. This article will provide a preliminary ethnographic description of aegyo based on the fieldwork performed in …
The Boratization Revisited
The intention of the essay is to try to understand the broader cultural conditions that surround the articulations of cultural studies in South-European Academia, but also to address the apparent ethical and political irrelevance of those articula-tions. A catalyst of this discussion is the author’s ongoing dissatisfaction with the widespread cultural studies activities in the South being mostly part of the corpo-ratization and westernization of …
Asian Dolls and the Westernized Gaze
This article offers a strictly qualitative approach to the range of historical and contemporary cultural practices and images, as well as literary histories, regarding dolls and dollification in East Asian context. The phenomenon of people, and especially women, considered and/or fashioned into “living dolls” is confirmed ethnographically and discussed theoretically. Direct ethnographic voices and the author’s own autoethnographic and theoretical…
Familiar affairs
This paper offers a critical insight into the present moment of Croatian literary and cultural theory by combining an overview of the main actors and interests with a problem-specific approach to the underlying tension or quarrel that is defining and shaping the field of Theory in the Croatian context. The paper depicts a cross-generational debate on the fictionality and reification of/by Theory. Deconstructive operations and the broad historiciz…
Piratical Cultural Studies
The essay adopts a broadly used trope of piracy/'piracy' to exemplify the possible need for an individualistic and neo-vitalist agenda (along with a conventional and mutually intolerant 'postmarxist-communal' and/or 'liberal-pragmatist-policy-oriented' approach) regarding both the methodology and the social mission of cultural studies. Relevant regional and family history of/ from the Croatian/Slovenian/Italian three-border zone is considered, al…
