  • Modelling the earliest north-western dispersal of Mediterranean Impressed Wares: New dates and Bayesian chronological model

Open Access•Didier Binder, Philippe Lanos et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2017

The authors attempt to specify the diffusion pattern of the Impressed-Ware Neolithic (Impresso-cardial complex, ICC), from south-eastern Italy onto the French Mediterranean coasts. Using ChronoModel® software, a Bayesian model was built with sets of dates obtained on well-contextualised, short-lived samples. The results highlight a clear tightening of the chronology in the so-called nuclear area (Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria) and a pioneer dispe…

  • The dawn of dentistry in the late upper Paleolithic: An early case of pathological intervention at Riparo Fredian

Open Access•G Oxilia, Flavia Fiorillo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 61

Objectives Early evidence for the treatment of dental pathology is found primarily among food‐producing societies associated with high levels of oral pathology. However, some Late Pleistocene hunter‐gatherers show extensive oral pathology, suggesting that experimentation with therapeutic dental interventions may have greater antiquity. Here, we report the second earliest probable evidence for dentistry in a Late Upper Paleolithic hunter‐gatherer …

  • Examining dietary variability of the earliest farmers of South‐Eastern Italy

Open Access•Roberta Lelli, Richard Allen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2012•Cited by: 15•References: 40

Stable isotope analysis of human remains has been used to address long‐standing debates regarding the speed and degree to which the introduction of farming transformed diet. In Europe, this debate has centered on northern and Atlantic regions with much less attention devoted to the arrival of farming across the Mediterranean. This study presents carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses of collagen from 19 human and 37 faunal remains from eight…

  • Nouvelles données sur le Néolithique ancien de l'aire corso-toscane

    Carlo Tozzi, Michel-Claude Weiss•ARTICLE•Bulletin de la Société…•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The authors summarise our knowledge of the Early Neolithic of the Corsican and Tuscan area, with special reference to Northern Corsica and Tuscany, and present new archaeological remains of this age recently found in the area. The Cala Giovanna Piano site (Pianosa Island, Arcipelago Toscano), excavated by a group of researchers from Corsica and Tuscany, has provided new data on the recent phase of the Early Neolithic. Studies carried out on other…
