Reciprocal exchanges across multilayered networks show an emerging patron-client system led by salaried households
Evolutionary models of social inequality suggest that status differentiation can emerge within cooperative networks through sustained asymmetric exchanges between high- and low-value resources, giving rise to patron-client relationships. From a network perspective, such asymmetric relationships take the form of multilayered reciprocity, where different types of resources are exchanged across domains. By analyzing multilayered support networks in …

Genetic, spatial, and social relationships among adults in a group of howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) from Barro Colorado Island, Panama

The Effects of Wealth on Male Reproduction among Monogamous Hunter-Fisher-Trappers in Northern Siberia
Variability in men's reproductive success (RS) is partly attributable to the ability of successful men to influence resource flows relevant to the mate choice and reproduction of women. This study explores the effects of variability in resource flows on men's RS in an indigenous foraging/mixed-economy community in northern Siberia where monogamous marriage norms predominate. A series of material, embodied, and relational wealth indicators are tes…

An empirical comparison of short tandem repeats (STRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for relatedness estimation in Chinese rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta )
We compare the effectiveness of short tandem repeat (STR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes for estimating pairwise relatedness, using molecular data and pedigree records from a captive Chinese rhesus macaque population at the California National Primate Research Center. We find that a panel of 81 SNPs is as effective at estimating first-order kin relationships as a panel of 14 highly polymorphic STRs. We note, however, that the …

Wealth Transmission and Inequality among Hunter-Gatherers
We report quantitative estimates of intergenerational transmission and population-wide inequality for wealth measures in a set of hunter-gatherer populations. Wealth is defined broadly as factors that contribute to individual or household well-being, ranging from embodied forms such as weight and hunting success to material forms such household goods, as well as relational wealth in exchange partners. Intergenerational wealth transmission is low …
Rousseau's Whale Hunt
In spite of its common use as a tool for examining cooperation, the prisoner's dilemma game does not conform to the reality of many socio-ecological contexts. Situations in which people engage in joint activities and maintain agreement in their preferences for outcomes are called "coordination games" by game theorists and "mutualism" by biologists. Coordination games are common, but cooperative outcomes are not always as easy to achieve as is gen…
