The Ara Pacis Augustae or Altar of Augustan Peace, erected by the Emperor outside Rome in 9 B.C., expresses perhaps more clearly than any other monument the ideology of the Augustan Age: the peaceful union of Rome with her Empire. At the same time, in the iconography of the east and west fronts, and especially in the images on the altar table, pedestal and plinth, it contains several expressions whose structures appear consonant with the triparti…

  • Myth, Method, and Madness [and Comments and Replies]

    Morris Freilich, J L Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1975•Cited by: 7

The structural analysis of myth is a prime focus of anthropological interest, largely because of the efforts of Levi-Strauss. This paper uses some Levi-Straussian ideas to develop a strategy for myth analysis that I call the non-sense-in-myth strategy (NIMS). The strategy is given a trial run on a well-known and (I believe) much-misunderstood myth: Adam and Eve in Eden. The structure identified has an evolutionary character consistent with many m…

This is as it should be. Indeed, it is incumbent upon anyone who would aspire to the role of generalist to maintain a continuing dialogue with specialists in the several fields about which he seeks to generalize. The new comparative Indo-European mythology, as developed by Professor Georges Dum6zil and his colleagues, is an outstanding example of a general interpretive scheme that has developed in large measure as a result of this kind of dialogu…

  • “Je ne suis pas … structuraliste”: Some Fundamental Differences between Dumézil and Lévi-Strauss

Open Access•C Scott Littleton•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•1974

It should be emphasized at the outset that Georges Dumézil does not consider himself to be a social theorist of any sort, least of all a “structuralist.” Indeed, his opinion of the structuralist movement, to say nothing of the extent to which others have attempted to associate him with the origin and development of that movement, is less than enthusiastic; and in the Introduction to Mythe et épopée III he has explicitly denied any connection what…
