Cornelis Easton
Dutch amateur astronomer Cornelis Easton studied French and obtained qualifications to teach that language in secondary schools, but in the end he became a journalist and newspaper editor. As a teenager he became interested in astronomy, inspired by the writings of Camille Flammarion. During most of his career he was active as an amateur astronomer and contributed important papers in international, professional astronomical journals on aspects of…

Jan Veth’s Paintings of Jacobus Kapteyn
Jacobus C. Kapteyn was one of the most prominent astronomers worldwide in the beginning of the twentieth century and is nowadays regarded as one of the coryfees of the University of Groningen. His legacy is not only the prominence of Dutch astronomy during the twentieth century through his students like Jan Oort and Willem de Sitter and the Dutch school that followed. Part of his legacy is also the two paintings of him, produced in oil on canvas …
Pannekoek’s Galaxy
Antonie ('Anton’) Pannekoek (1873–1960), the founder of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Amsterdam, is remembered as one of the initiators of the field of stellar atmospheres. A second, maybe equally significant part of his research and legacy did not concern stellar, but Galactic astronomy. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Harvard University and the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (UK) for his total research ef…
Excited States and Spontaneous Transitions
This paper concentrates on my life as an astronomer performing observational and interpretative research, as a university staff member and professor teaching students elementary and advanced courses and supervising PhD students, as an administrator serving on boards and committees within the University of Groningen, at national and international level in organizations related to astronomy or science funding, and finally as an author of biographie…
Pieter Johannes Van Rhijn, Kapteyn's Astronomical Laboratory and the Plan of Selected Areas
In this paper I discuss the Kapteyn Astronomical Laboratory during the period of Pieter Johannes van Rhijn's Directorate, which lasted from 1921 to 1957. It had developed under the founder Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn into one of the leading astronomical research institutes in the world. When van Rhijn took over at the retirement of Kapteyn, it was in the process of coordinating Kapteyn's Plan of Selected Areas with the aim of determining the struct…
Iau Commission C3 (History of Astronomy)
Karl Schwarzschild, Annie J. Cannon and Cornelis Easton
Honorary degrees and particularly doctorates are important instruments to enhance the standing of universities and professors, in addition to receiving these as a measure of a scientist's recognition. Jacobus C. Kapteyn from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, one of the most prominent astronomers of his times, received three of these and has persuaded his university to award at least three, possibly five. I examine the background of …
