The History of Early Low Frequency Radio Astronomy in Australia. 11
During the 1950s and 1960s, Australia was a world leader in the specialised field of low-frequency radio astronomy, with two geographically distinct areas of activity. One was in the Sydney region, and the other was on the island of Tasmania to the south of the Australian mainland. Research in the Sydney region began in 1949 through the CSIRO’s Division of Radiophysics. Initially, it was carried out at the Hornsby Valley field station before tran…

One was in the Sydney region run by the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics (RP), and the other was on the island of Tasmania to the south of the Australian mainland, undertaken by the radio astronomy pioneer Grote Reber, and researchers for the University of Tasmania. The History of Early Low Frequency Radio Astronomy in Australia. 10
In 1955-1956, soon after the announcement by Burke and Franklin of the existence of decametric bursts from Jupiter and Shain's report on pre-discovery observations carried out in Australia in 1950-1951, Alex Shain and Frank Gardner carried out observations of this emission at 19.6 MHz from the CSIRO's Division of Radiophysics Fleurs and Potts Hill field stations in Sydney. Some Fleurs observations also were conducted at 14 and 27 MHz. This paper1…
