Reminiscences of a Radio Astronomer
I came to radio astronomy after working as an engineer in Tasmania. Supported by Grote Reber, I went to Cambridge and joined Martin Ryle’s group. On completion of my PhD I moved to Professor Christiansen’s Department at the University of Sydney. There I lectured on Electrical Engineering and conducted research with radio telescopes at Fleurs, Parkes and Molonglo. For a sabbatical visit in 1966 I came to Bonn and interacted with Professor Otto Hac…
The History of Early Low Frequency Radio Astronomy in Australia. 10
In 1955-1956, soon after the announcement by Burke and Franklin of the existence of decametric bursts from Jupiter and Shain's report on pre-discovery observations carried out in Australia in 1950-1951, Alex Shain and Frank Gardner carried out observations of this emission at 19.6 MHz from the CSIRO's Division of Radiophysics Fleurs and Potts Hill field stations in Sydney. Some Fleurs observations also were conducted at 14 and 27 MHz. This paper1…
