  • Climate emergency: Lessons from the Covid-19 emergency

David Sugden, David E Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Geographical Journal•2020

The COP-26 United Nations Climate Change meeting, scheduled to be held in Glasgow in 2021, is an important step in the world’s attempt to deal with the climate emergency arising from increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Here we look at how society has responded to the Covid-19 emergency and compare it with the response to the climate change emergency, the latter based on our experience of a Royal Society of Edinburgh Inquiry on climate change pub…

AIM: These international clinical practice recommendations (CPR) for developmental coordination disorder (DCD), initiated by the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD), aim to address key questions on the definition, diagnosis, assessment, intervention, and psychosocial aspects of DCD relevant for clinical practice. METHOD: Key questions in five areas were considered through literature reviews and formal expert consensus. For recommendat…

  • Intervention for young children displaying coordination disorders

Open Access•Mary E Chambers, David Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Early Childhood Research•2014•References: 1

The years from 3 to 6 are a time when children develop fundamental movement skills that are the building blocks for the functional movements they use throughout their lives. By 6 years of age, a typically developing child will have in place a full range of movement skills, including, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, climbing, throwing, catching, kicking, striking, writing and drawing. These will not necessarily be performed in a competent man…

  • Inclusion of children with special educational needs in mainstream schools in Ghana: Influence of teachers’ and children’s characteristics

Emmanuel Kofi Gyimah, David Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•References: 4

The issue of where to teach children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities has been a great concern as countries respond to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Salamanca Statement on inclusion of 1994. In this study, the responses of 500 trained and untrained mainstream primary school teachers selected from three of the ten regions of Ghana were analysed to investigate their attitudes to i…

  • Intervention in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder: The role of parents and teachers

Open Access•David Sugden, David A Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2003

Background: Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) are a heterogeneous group who have a marked impairment in the performance of functional skills. Provision for these children is usually made via a paediatrician through occupational or physiotherapy though, with a prevalence rate of 5%, regular provision is not possible due to limited professional resources. Aims: The study aimed to determine the extent to which parents and teach…

  • Glacier Modeling and the Climate of Patagonia during the Last Glacial Maximum

Open Access•Nick Hulton, David Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Ice cap modeling constrained by empirical studies provides an effective way of reconstructing past climates. The former Patagonian ice sheet is in a climatically significant location since it lies athwart the Southern Hemisphere westerlies and responds to the latitudinal migration of climatic belts during glacial cycles. A numerical model of the Patagonian ice cap for the last glacial maximum (LGM) is developed, which is time-dependent and driven…

  • The Assessment of Movement Skill Problems in 7‐ and 9‐year‐old Children

Open Access•David Sugden, LORRIE SUGDEN•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1991

S ummary . This paper is part of a project examining movement skill problems in an educational setting, and aims to provide guidelines for the assessment and management of movement problems within the primary school. The first part of the project reported here involves teachers assessing children on tasks they perform in day to day school life. A Motor Competence Checklist (MCC) was developed and tested on 350 seven‐ and nine‐year‐old children. D…

S ummary . Two tests of motor behaviour examined the performance of 8‐and 12‐year‐old children with moderate learning difficulties. On the Test of Motor Impairment 50 per cent of 8‐year‐olds and 29 per cent of 12‐year‐olds had motor problems as compared to 5 per cent in a normal population. One third of 8‐year‐olds and one fifth of 12‐year‐olds were performing at least two years below their age level. The Test of Kinaesthetic Sensitivity assessed…

Campbell Gemmell, Dominic Smart et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1986•Cited by: 3

There are two views concerning the mountains of Snowdonia and their role during former glaciations of Britain. One is that they formed a subsidiary centre for ice dispersal, while the second is that they were overrun by westward-flowing ice derived from the main Welsh ice centre in the east. In this paper striation directions are used to test the two hypotheses. The striation pattern reflects ice flow radiating from the general vicinity of Snowdo…

    Open Access•David Sugden, D A SUGDEN et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1981

S ummary . Serial and discrete tasks were employed to investigate movement speed in ESN boys. Different movement difficulties were presented and Fitts' Law was confirmed, with a linear relationship between movement time and information load. Reaction time was unaffected by an increase in the difficulty of the required movement. Measures of capacity placed the ESN boys at least 5 years behind chronologically age matched normal boys. Performance wa…

  • Teaching geomorphology at university

David Sugden, Patrick L Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 1

A questionnaire survey on the content and structure of geomorphology courses taught in university geography departments in Britain reveals that current practice is for teaching to be structured around courses and subheadings which reflect the main landform/process systems (e.g. fluvial, glacial) rather than more abstract concepts. This empirically‐based orientation is convenient, but in the long run it could be inefficient and unchallenging. Thre…

    Open Access•David Sugden, D A SUGDEN•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1978

S ummary . 45 ESN boys in three mental age groups of 6, 9, and 12 years were examined for developmental trends and rehearsal strategies on a visual motor short term memory task. Comparisons were made with 45 normal boys aged 6, 9, and 12. Developmental trends and rehearsal strategies were almost totally absent in ESN boys. Normal boys were superior to ESN boys when central processing space was available during a condition of rest. No differences …

  • Structural Landforms: Landforms Associated with Granitic Rocks, Faults, and Folded Strata

David Sugden, David E Sugden et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1972

Up to the end of last century, landforms were viewed largely as expressions of the structure of the earth's underlying crust. But such interpretations were concerned for the most part with generalities and broad effects; the subtleties of structural factors became overshadowed first by cyclic explanations and then by the modern emphasis on process and climatic geomorphology. This book arose from the neglect of structural factors in geomorphologic…
