Velocity and Purpose among Reindeer Herders in the Verkhoyansk Mountains
Why would anyone want to travel fast? This paper places local evaluations of velocity in the context of purpose, distinguishing between the excursion of the hunter, the perpetual annual circuit of the reindeer herder and the one-off journey. Reindeer hooves and sledge runners enhance human velocity on the ground. In its extreme reduction of friction, aviation mimics the soul-flight of shamans and compresses distance, but also creates new purposes…

What is a reindeer? Indigenous perspectives from northeast Siberia
The reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) is the mainstay of most of the indigenous cultures and economies of the Eurasian north. Yet much of the literature ignores indigenous perspectives in favour of ecological perspectives based on a resource-oriented model. While acknowledging the role of scientific writing on reindeer, here we explore the meaning of reindeer economies that are also reindeer cultures. We show how reindeer can be endowed with a perso…
Casting Timeshadows: Pleasure and Sadness of Moving among Nomadic Reindeer Herders in north-east Siberia
Mobility is not simply imposed by the movement of animals, but gives a specific quality to human life. A long-term study of cyclical movement among Eveny reindeer herders reveals an alternating build-up and release of tension as each site is activated by human engagement with its spirits and then becomes dormant again until the following year. In each onward move, pleasure is mingled with sadness to form an indigenous aesthetic as the herder's in…
Siberia
Siberia is a vast and varied region, linked horizontally to the circumpolar Arctic and vertically to Mongolia and Central Asia. Nineteenth-century anthropological fieldwork was important abroad, particularly in America. From the 1920 to 1980s, Siberia was almost totally isolated from outside research and from comparative anthropology. However, Soviet anthropologists conducted lengthy fieldwork, producing a huge corpus of valuable material in Russ…

Sacrifice as the ideal hunt: A Cosmological Explanation for the Origin of Reindeer Domestication
The Siberian Northeast shows striking parallels between the cosmologies of hunters and reindeer herders. What may this tell us about the transformation from hunting to pastoralism? This article argues for a structural identity between hunting and sacrifice, and for the domestication of the reindeer as the result of hunters' efforts to use sacrifice to control the accidental variables of the hunt. Hunters can practise their ethos of 'trust' with p…
