  • ‘Wino z jęczmienia’ – właściwości piwa antycznego w świetle literatury greckiej i rzymskiej

Wojciech Duszyński•ARTICLE•In Gremium. Studies in History,…•2025

  • Iphicrates, (Re)foundation of Drys, and Athenian Activity in the Northern Aegean in the 4th Century B.C

    Open Access•Wojciech Duszyński•ARTICLE•Electrum•2025

This paper elaborates on a curious episode in the career of Iphicrates—famous Athenian strategos and mercenary commander in the first half of the 4th century B.C. According to Theopompus [FGrH 115 F 161], Iphicrates was somehow involved in a settlement of the Thracian town of Drys. His presence there is also corroborated by a testimony of Demosthenes [XXIII 131–132], but the rhetor does not precise what Iphicrates’ exactly did there. Both sources…

  • Beer in Antiquity, Antiquity in Beer

    Open Access•Wojciech Duszyński•ARTICLE•Classica Cracoviensia•2021

Modern breweries taking inspiration from ancient cultures appear as a quite interesting phenomenon, because beer is absent from the current imaginarium about the ancient Greeks and Romans. Yet it was not unknown to them, as demonstrated by the survey of sources in the first part of the text. Actually, some brewers today are aware of the beverage’s presence in ancient literature and use this knowledge in the naming of their products. Others decide…

  • Athenian ‘Imperialism’ in the Aegean Sea in the 4th Century BCE

    Open Access•Wojciech Duszyński•ARTICLE•Electrum•2020

This article concerns the degree of direct involvement in the Athenian foreign policy in the 4th century BC. One of main questions debated by scholars is whether the Second Athenian Sea League was gradually evolving into an arche, to eventually resemble the league of the previous century. The following text contributes to the scholarly debate through a case study of relations between Athens and poleis on the island of Keos in 360s. Despite its sm…
