In less than a century, the Jews of Łódź turned from being confined to a small, overcrowded Jewish district to a major partner in forming the industrial town. Nonetheless, this full participation did not last long. When the ghetto gates were open, Łódź Jews left all they had built and moved to the once confined area and its vicinity.
