A Carbon Wealth Tax
Although economists widely advocate carbon pricing as an effective solution to reduce carbon emissions, this mechanism has had so far limited effects. This paper proposes a new type of tax to help finance (and accelerate) the green transition. A carbon wealth tax (CWT) is proposed to be levied on carbon-intensive (brown) wealth rather than primarily on carbon-intensive goods. We consider tax implementation issues such as tax base, incidence, and …

Article Reply to the Comments by Hans-Helmut Kotz and Friedrich Heinemann to “A Proposal for a Carbon Wealth Tax: Modelling, Empirics, and Policy” (DOI https://doi.org/10.1515/jbnst-2024-0078) was published on May 22, 2025 in the journal Jahrbücher für Nationalökonomie und Statistik (volume 0, issue 0)
Time Scales of the Low-Carbon Transition
This paper employs a dynamic multi-sector growth model with changing technology to study the relevance of the price and quantity dimensions involved in the technical substitution of carbon-intensive technology, that is, the low-carbon transition. For the framing of the transition, the stylized market dynamics by Flaschel and Semmler (1987. “Classical and Neoclassical Competitive Adjustment Processes.” The Manchester School 55 (1): 13–37) are used…
Greenhouse gases mitigation
Policies designed to control greenhouse gases imply domestic tradeoffs and international externalities, which lead to both domestic and international conflicts, influencing their feasibility and implementations. Our paper investigates two quantitative aspects within this debate. We intend to quantify the impact of: (a) the internalization of international externalities; and (b) the damage associated with a short-term view of climate policies. In …

The Macroeconomics of Austerity in the European Union
The main purpose of this study is to analyze the macroeconomic dynamics and stability of an artificial monetary union consisting of two industrialized economies with the similar economic structure (for the sake of concreteness, Germany and France) under a stylized debt brake rule using an estimated semi-structural dynamic macroeconomic model. The rationales for fiscal budgetary rules are briefly discussed and the functioning of a particular type …

The European Sovereign Debt Crisis
Only a decade ago, slow growth and high unemployment plagued Germany, but the "sick man of Europe" has now moved to outperform the Eurozone average growth since the second quarter of 2010. This confirms Germany's recovery and its status as the growth engine of the continent. This surely is a success story. While Germany (also Austria and the Netherlands) is prospering, the peripheral countries in the Eurozone are confronted with a severe sovereig…

Imaging Methods in Oncology
Early diagnosis of a tumour is a major problem in the treatment of cancer. Recent technological advances have given new tools to the clinician, and in this review four diagnostic approaches are detailed – staging of lung cancer by computed tomography (CT), radiation therapy planning with CT, follow-up with magnetic resonance spectroscopy and follow-up of colorectal malignancies with positron emission tomography. The present status and future pros…

Competition, Monopoly, and Differentils of Profit Rates
This paper discusses the theoretical background and the empirical evidence for the post-Marxian theory of monopoly. Special attention is given to the theory of monopoly capital and the hypothesis that industrial concentration and the rise of large corporations lead to stable and persistent differential profit rates between industries and size classes of firms. The paper begins by comparing the notions of competition that have been developed in pa…
