Of course a relation to the past is necessary but can one live on pure criticism? The question reflects the unease of a disenchanted civilization fearful that in freeing itself of the past it will exhaust its (re)sources. The first to formulate this dilemma was Nietzsche. As an alternative to an exhaustive and worn out historicism he suggested a triple monumental, antique and critical relation to the past, each one serving to correct the other tw…

    Irving Wohlfarth•ARTICLE•New German Critique•1986•Cited by: 3

The process of recasting (Umschmelzungsprozess) which has brought the whole, originally metaphysical mass of thoughts to an aggregate state (Aggregatszustand) in which the world ofdialectical images is proof against all the objections that metaphysics provokes. At this stage (indeed for the first time), I can serenely face whatever objections can be mobilized against the method of my work on the part of orthodox Marxism. 2

Despite frequent claims to the contrary, the later Walter Benjamin can be thought of as a materialist, even if only as a historical materialist sui generis. He himself insists too resolutely on this title for it to be summarily refused him. His adversary in the field of historiography is said to be historicism. The polemic against historicism dominates the sixth and seventh of the Theses on the Philoso

If one wants to consider history as a text, then what a recent author says about literary texts also holds true for it. The past, he writes, has deposited images in them comparable to those retained by a photosensitive plate. Only the future has at its disposal developers strong enough to bring out the image in full detail. ... (Monglond) . . . To read what was never written, says Hofmannsthal. The reader in question is the true historian

It hopes thereby, in politically inert times, to keep alive the best impulses behind both critical theory and the student movement that wanted, however fallibly, to put it into practice. Irving Wohlfarth•ARTICLE•New German Critique•1979•Cited by: 1

The dissimulating harmony that Carol Jacobs elicits from her analyses of selected texts by Nietzsche, Rilke, Artaud and Benjamin marks an instructive contrast from the unmediated vision that Geoffrey Hartman derived twenty-five years before from his close readings of Wordsworth, Hopkins, Rilke and Valery.
