  • Flood-induced traffic congestion and accessibility loss for urban road networks using agent-based simulation

Open Access•Ke He, Neil Carhart et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

This study proposes a methodology for assessing the impact of flood-induced functional disruptions on urban road networks through an agent-based traffic simulation. Network functionality is altered by reducing roads’ free-flow speeds using a risk-based approach, and traffic is appraised considering agent-based traffic dynamics. MATSim, an open-source transport simulator, is employed to model dynamic traffic redistribution and congestion under bot…

  • Revisions to the Nepalese Building Code (NBC 105

Open Access•Rama M Pokhrel, Raffaele De Risi et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2026

Enhanced seismic hazard assessments are needed to improve codes of practice for use in earthquake-prone regions. In 2020, Nepal published an update to the 1994 building code, which incorporates learning from new research after the 7.8 Mw 2015 Gorkha earthquake and best practices from seismic codes at the international level. In this technical note, the seismic hazard of the latest version of the code is compared with recent probabilistic seismic …

  • Integrated tsunami risk framework considering agent-based evacuation modelling

Open Access•Ario Muhammad, Raffaele De Risi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

This study develops an integrated tsunami risk framework combining stochastic tsunami hazard and agent-based evacuation modelling. The framework is applied to the case of Saga, Kochi, Japan, with a population of ∼ 2,200 anticipated to experience significant tsunami events (∼ M9.0). First, stochastic earthquake source models are generated for two values of magnitudes (M8.8 and M9.0) and used to carry out stochastic tsunami inundation simulations. …

  • Scenario-based earthquake risk assessment for central-southern Malawi

  • Tsunami risk communication and management

Open Access•Irina Rafliana, Fatemeh Jalayer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2022

Very large tsunamis are associated with low probabilities of occurrence. In many parts of the world, these events have usually occurred in a distant time in the past. As a result, there is low risk perception and a lack of collective memories, making tsunami risk communication both challenging and complex. Furthermore, immense challenges lie ahead as population and risk exposure continue to increase in coastal areas. Through the last decades, tsu…

  • Multi-hazard earthquake-tsunami loss estimation of Kuroshio Town, Kochi Prefecture, Japan considering the Nankai-Tonankai megathrust rupture scenarios

Open Access•Katsuichiro Goda, Raffaele De Risi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2021
