This article illustrates the three criteria underpinning the creation of a Transnational Italian Studies major at UCSB in 2020: translation, imaginary, and nation-ness

  • Eden K. McLean. Mussolini’s Children: Race and Elementary Education in Fascist Italy

    Open Access•Claudio Fogu•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2020

Mussolini’s Children: Race and Elementary Education in Fascist Italy aims much further that its unassuming title suggests. As the blurb on its jacket recites, “Mussolini’s Children uses the lens of state-mandated youth culture to analyze the evolution of official racism in Fascist Italy.” It does so by going over the much-explored territory of primary school legislation, articles by Fascist educators, Mussolinian mottoes, and documents related to…

  • Unità multiple. Centocinquant’anni? Unità? Italia

Claudio Fogu•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2016

Born of a 2011 conference by the same title, held at the University of Calabria (Cosenza, Italy), the volume Unita multiple remains true, for the most part, to the interrogative marks it adds to it

  • The Fascist Stylisation of Time

    Open Access•Claudio Fogu•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2015•Cited by: 1

The Fascist Stylisation of Time Stimulated by the publication of Roger Griffith's Modernism and Fascism (2007), this piece revisits my 2003 study of fascist politics of history in Italy to identify the ideal-typical traits of what I call the fascist «historic imaginary», and explore its relations with its relation to the discursive and mental phenomena we call postmodernism/postmodernity. I argue that the fascist mental orientation towards time d…

  • Digitalizing Historical Consciousness

    Open Access•Claudio Fogu•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2009•Cited by: 5

What is a "historical" video game, let alone a successful one? It is difficult to answer this question because all our definitions of history have been constructed in a linear-narrative cultural context that is currently being challenged and in large part displaced by digital media, especially video games. I therefore consider this question from the point of view of historical semantics and in relation to the impact of digital technology on all a…

  • The Historic Imaginary: Politics of History in Fascist Italy

    Claudio Fogu, Stefania Lucamante•ARTICLE•Quaderni d italianistica•2004

Focusing on both ritual and mass-visual representations of history in 1920s and 1930s Italy, The Historic Imaginary unveils how Italian Fascism sought to institutionalize a modernist culture of history. The study takes a new historicist and microhistorical approach to cultural-intellectual history, integrating theoretical tools of analysis acquired from visual-cultural studies, art history, linguistics, and reception theory in a sophisticated exa…

  • The Historic Imaginary: Politics of History in Fascist Italy

    Claudio Fogu•BOOK•Historic Imaginary•2003

The author claims that his study of fascist historic culture opens the way to an understanding and re-evaluation of the historical relationship between the modernist critique of historical consciousness and the rise of post-modernist forms of temporality

  • Actualism and the Fascist Historic Imaginary

    Open Access•Claudio Fogu•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2003

This essay argues that, just like liberalism and communism, fascist ideology was based on a specific philosophy of history articulated by Giovanni Gentile in the aftermath of World War I. Gentile's actualist notion that history "belongs to the present" articulated an immanent vision of the relationship between historical agency, representation, and consciousness against all transcendental conceptions of history. I define this vision as historic (…
