Mapping artistic evolution: A trajectory-based computational analysis of Picasso’s stylistic development
This study examines the stylistic evolution of Pablo Picasso through a quantitative analysis of his artistic production. Using a corpus of 1170 digitised artworks sourced from WikiArt, we computed a set of image-based metrics grounded in aesthetic theory, including Shannon Entropy (EM), Fractal Dimension (FD), Birkhoff’s Aesthetic Measure (BAM), Euclidean Distance (ED) and Contextual Fit (CF). These metrics were used to characterise structural an…
Ace in the hole: Playing cards show the role of order and magnitude in the SNARC effect
The SNARC effect indicates that numbers are mapped from left to right as in a mental number line. Accumulating evidence suggests that it could be attributed both to the magnitude or to the order of numbers, but the role of these two aspects has not yet been disambiguated since the two are tightly correlated. This study investigated the influence of order and magnitude in the SNARC effect using playing cards as stimuli. While most people organize …
It’s SNARC o’ clock: Manipulating the salience of the context in a conceptual replication of Bächtold et al.’s (1998) clockface study
The Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect consists in faster left-/right-key responses to small/large numbers. (Bächtold et al., Neuropsychologia 36:731–735, 1998) reported the reversal of this effect after eliciting the context of a clockface—where small numbers are represented on the right and large numbers on the left. The present study investigates how the salience of a particular spatial-numerical context, which refl…
Creative-aesthetic product design and tools
Providing a product with characteristics of beauty and creative innovation is one of the aims of any contemporary industry to meet the needs of customers and satisfy their aesthetic and functional requirements. To study the production process and the realisation of creative products with aesthetically pleasing attributes, we created an environment that allows the construction of simple textured polygons (triangles, squares, rhombuses and pentagon…
Shaping the aesthetical landscape by using image statistics measures
Aesthetics and evaluation of objects is becoming increasingly important in contemporary society. Although there have been many studies on processes related to computational aesthetic, a clear formalisation and visualization of the aesthetic field is still lacking. In this paper, we present a set of Machine Learning techniques and mathematical methods to extract the most important features related to aesthetical evaluation, thus making this proces…

Chaos, CNN, Memristors and Beyond: A Festschrift for Leon Chua
Toward the Use of Chua's Circuit in Education, Art and Interdisciplinary Research: Some Implementation and Opportunities
This paper considers the merging of Chaos with art, including such forms as digital images, sounds and music, based on dynamic systems derived from Chua's Circuit and using appropriate coding methods. Design elements, logos, musical instruments, software environments, multimedia theater performances and virtual museums with strange attractors have also been realized. In the field of education, the paper introduces environments that have foreseen …
Connecting Art and Science for Education: "Learning through an Advanced Virtual Theater with "Talking Heads
The authors present an innovative virtual theater in which the language of performance joins advanced technologies for educational goals. On the stage of this pioneering theatrical environment human actors interact with 3D faces ("talking heads") on a wide screen. These synthetic characters are endowed with emotional expressions and voices and resemble famous personalities such as Pythagoras and Einstein. The performance aims at the exposition of…
Synthetic Harmonies: An Approach to Musical Semiosis by Means of Cellular Automata
The authors explore the creation of artificial universes that are expressible through music and internally comprehensible as complex systems. The semiotic approach this paper presents could also allow the development of new tools of investigation into the complexity of artificial-life systems. Through codification systems using musical language, it is possible to understand the patterns that the global dynamics of cellular automata produce and to…
