Populism after prohibition: Islamist mobilisation and informal religious law in Indonesia
The Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI) was officially banned by the Indonesian government in 2020, its organisational networks dissolved and its activities formally criminalised. Yet in the 2024 elections, FPI leaders and sympathisers continued to shape political discourse and mobilisation. This paper asks: How do populist movements rooted in religious identity reconstruct legitimacy after exclusion from formal politics? Using the…
The emotional logic of populist communication: A systematic review
This article systematically reviews recent empirical research on the role of emotions in populist politics. Following PRISMA guidelines, we review 51 peer-reviewed studies published between 2017 and 2024 across political science, psychology, communication, and sociology. We examine how populism is conceptualised, how emotions are measured, and what evidence exists regarding their role in populist mobilisation. We distinguish between two main stra…
Disruptive Signification in a Hybrid Media Ecology: Civilisational Populism in Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia
This paper employs the ontic/ontological distinction to explore the relationship between religion and populism in Pakistan, Turkey, and Indonesia within a hybrid media ecology. Building on recent discussions of nationalism and populism, the study investigates civilizational populism through the lens of the ontic/ontological distinction, which separates the ‘content’ and ‘form’ of populism. This framework is critical for understanding how populist…

Understanding Civilizational Populism in Europe and North America: The United States, France, and Poland
This article tests the salience of the concept of “civilizational populism” in the European and North American contexts. Right-wing populism is increasingly successful across a range of countries in Europe and North America. While right-wing populism is oriented toward nationalism and nativism, many right-wing populist parties increasingly perceive, as Brubaker puts it, the “opposition between self and other” and “the boundaries of belonging” not…
Civilizational Populism in Domestic and Foreign Policy: The Case of Turkey
This article investigates whether Turkish populism has undergone a 'civilizational turn' akin to what Brubaker, Haynes, Yilmaz, and Morieson have described occurring among populist parties in Europe and North America. The article applies Yilmaz and Morieson's definition of 'civilizational populism' to Turkey under the rule of the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) in order to determine whether the party conforms to this definition. The…
Civilizational Populism in Indonesia: The Case of Front Pembela Islam (FPI)
This article examines whether a 'civilizational turn' has occurred among populist movements in Indonesia. It focuses on the civilizational elements in the populist discourse of the Front Pembela Islam (Islamic Defender Front/FPI) in Indonesia. The article traces the FPI's history and growing influence on politics and society in Indonesia in the 2010s. This article argues that the FPI has instrumentalized religious discourse, and through it divide…
Religious Populisms in the Asia Pacific
Most of the literature on religion's relationship with populism is Eurocentric and has so far focused on European populist party discourses and, to a degree, on the United States, in particular, on the Christian identity populism of the Tea Party and the Trump movement within the Republican Party. However, across the Asia-Pacific region, religion has become an important component of populist discourses. It has been instrumentalised by populists i…
Civilizational Populism: Definition, Literature, Theory, and Practice
The purpose of this article is to clarify the concept of 'civilizational populism' and work towards a concise but operational definition. To do this, the article examines how populists across the world, and in a variety of different religious, geographic, and political contexts, incorporate and instrumentalize notions of 'civilization' into their discourses. The article observes that although a number of scholars have described a civilization tur…

Religious and Pro-Violence Populism in Indonesia: The Rise and Fall of a Far-Right Islamist Civilisationist Movement
The first quarter of the twenty-first century has witnessed the rise of populism around the world. While it is widespread it manifests in its own unique ways in each society, nation, and region. Religious populism, once rarely discussed, has come to take a more prominent role in the politics of a diverse range of societies and countries, as religious discourse is increasingly used by mainstream and peripheral populist actors alike. This paper exa…

Religion in Creating Populist Appeal: Islamist Populism and Civilizationism in the Friday Sermons of Turkey's Diyanet
Drawing on the extant literature on populism, we aim to flesh out how populists in power utilize religion and related state resources in setting up aggressive, multidimensional religious populist "us" versus "them" binaries. We focus on Turkey as our case and argue that by instrumentalizing the Diyanet (Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs), the authoritarian Islamists in power have been able to consolidate manufactured populist dichotomies v…
