  • Ukrainian War Humor and Civic Activism in 2022

    Open Access•N Klumbyte, Kateryna Yeremieieva•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2024•References: 15

The 2022 war in Ukraine has produced the biggest virtual humor archive in the history of wars. We argue that Ukrainian war humor is a form of civic activism in the name of Ukraine’s sovereignty. This civic activism is defined by resistance, solidarity, vigilance, and dedication to victory. The war humor circulates locally as well as on a global stage. It expresses the government’s positions and the people’s voices and empowers those affected by t…

  • Rožytė – Vilniaus legenda: Laisvė, mados estetika ir mistika Vidutės Gumbytės Vilniaus istorijoje

    N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•Lietuvos etnologija / Lithuanian…•2024•References: 1

Vidutė Gumbytė (1949–2021), who was known as Rožytė (Rosie) by residents of the city, strolled the streets of Vilnius for almost five decades. Her story was unique, her style of fashion was eccentric, her lifestyle was idiosyncratic. In this article, I analyse Vidutė Gumbytė-Rožytė’s story as a Vilnius legend. I argue that Vilnius residents were fascinated by her freedom from social norms, her unusual sense of fashion, and the mystique that surro…

  • Lithuania at the Frontier of the War in Ukraine

    N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•Current History•2022

In the 1990s, Lithuania’s sovereignty politics was defined by its departure from the Soviet authoritarian regime and the transition to democracy, culminating in its integration into the European Union and NATO in 2004. Since Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, Lithuania’s sovereignty has been threatened by Russia’s revisionist politics. Lithuania espoused strong support for Ukraine after Russia’s 2022 invasion, voicing the most radical positio…

  • Goddess in disguise: Transsociality and the aesthetics of living

    Open Access•N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2022

Rosie used to say that there was nobody else like her. Her idiosyncratic way of living was an aesthetic recreation of the social that was partly informed by normative sociality while transgressing many aspects of it. She was an eccentric street fashion artist of Vilnius whose world and home were populated by animals and beautiful things. She spent a lot of time on the road. I introduce the concept of transsociality to analyze an idiosyncratic way…

  • Sovereignty and political belonging in post-Soviet Lithuania: Ethnicity, migration, and historical justice

    N Klumbyte, Kristina Šliavaitė•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 15

In this article, we review the history of building a post-Soviet sovereign state in Lithuania by institutionalizing social and political difference of some groups in laws, policy, and public discourse. We argue that an exclusive inclusion of national (ethnic) minorities and migrants have played an important role in defining political belonging to a post-Soviet sovereign state. Language and citizenship laws and policies have been the major sites t…

  • Sovereign Uncertainty and the Dangers to Liberalism at the Baltic Frontier

    Open Access•N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2019•Cited by: 8

A war frontier in Lithuania was engendered by the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March of 2014 and the beginning of the undeclared war in eastern Ukraine. This essay explores how the new war frontier emerged in Lithuania, becoming an integral part of the public sphere and civic life. I argue that the war frontier is a social institution of sovereign uncertainty, which engenders divisive politics of historical justice, protectio…

only abstract in English; full article and abstract in Lithuanian] In Lithuania, the politics of history center on Lithuania's Soviet occupation and post-war resistance, while in Russia the focus is on the USSR's victory in WWII and the USSR's role in the liberation of Europe from fascism. I argue that the politics of history in Lithuania and Russia create mutually exclusive, institutionalized, bipolar historical structures, according to which ju…

  • Of power and laughter: Carnivalesque politics and moral citizenship in Lithuania

    Open Access•N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2014•Cited by: 18•References: 35

During Lithuania's 2008 parliamentary elections, National Resurrection Party members dressed up as vampires, insane people, criminals, and prostitutes to gain people's votes. They mocked the state and laughed at political elites and electoral politics. I argue that the 2008 electoral carnivalesque was a politics of becoming, a fluid and open-ended process that engaged communities of despair and promoted moral citizenship through laughter. It was …

In Lithuania, while the official newspapers and journals were commonly distrusted, The Broom was perceived as a grassroots media. In this article, the author asks how officially sanctioned sociali…

  • Europe and Its Fragments: Europeanization, Nationalism, and the Geopolitics of Provinciality in Lithuania

    Open Access•N Klumbyte•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2011•Cited by: 11•References: 16

With a focus on Gintaras Beresnevičius's book The Making of an Empire (2003) and the marketing and consumption of "Soviet" sausages, this article explores the rise of national ideologies that promote an "eastern" and "Soviet" identity in Lithuania. Both during the nationalist movement against the Soviet Union and later in the 1990s and 2000s, the west and Europe were seen as sites of prestige, power, and goodness. Recently the reinvented "east" a…

In Lithuania, the first country to secede from the Soviet Union, the termSoviethas been used in public space to refer to the vanished Soviet empire and to experiences of colonization and resistance. However, in 1998, the "Soviet" symbol was successfully revived in the Lithuanian consumer food market as a brand name for meat products-primarily sausages. In this article, I argue that the market is a political arena in which values, ideologies, iden…
