  • People Are Important

    D J Struik, Dirk Struik•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1998

I had been participating in the struggle for the freedom of Sacco and Vanzetti in the Netherlands, and then in 1927 was in Boston, right near the prison where they were kept. And so I struggled with the protesters during the last months. I remember on the day of the execution I was in New York, where I had an assignment in the Bell Telephone Laboratories, and we went to a large mass meeting addressed by Norman Thomas, the socialist. Then news cam…

  • Multiculturalism and the History of Mathematics

    D J Struik, Dirk Struik•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1995

We hear much about the necessity of learning about other cultures than our own, so called "western," culture, which is supposed to be in many ways "Eurocentric." I would like to show you with some examples how this has worked rather naturally in the development of the history of mathematics. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this ar…

  • The Struik Case of 1951

    D J Struik, Dirk Struik•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1993

In a famous speech delivered in Fulton, Missouri in March, 1946, Winston Churchill declared the outbreak of the Cold War. There was, he said, an iron curtain hanging across Europe, using an expression of Goebbels, der eiserne Schirm. Truman was there. Roosevelt's policy of accommodation with the Soviets was now abandoned. It was time to contain, if not destroy, the Soviet Union, the enemy of a ruling class that dreamt of an American Empire, econo…

    Open Access•D J Struik, Dirk Struik•ARTICLE•Science in Context•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Robert Merton may not remember it, but in the 1930s we met in Cambridge and took one or more walks together - 1 think they were along Trapelo Road in Waltham, then a rural lane. Our conversation must have been interesting, since I remember the episode, but I can only guess at the subject. Since Merton was working on the sociology of science in Newton's day and I had a long standing interest in the relations between mathematics and society, especi…

  • On the Foundations of the Theory of Probabilities

    Open Access•D J Struik•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1934•Cited by: 3

The foundation of the mathematical theory of probabilities is still a controversial subject. There are schools of insufficient reasoning and of cogent reasoning, of a priori determination and of frequency determination, of subjective and of objective probability. Two main difficulties exist. The first is the definition of equally like events. The second difficulty is the relation between the laws of causal natural science (mechanics, electrodynam…
