Popular Culture Icons: Grateful Dead and Deadheads
The Grateful Dead is usually described as a psychedelic rock band, but its improvisational music cannot be neatly categorized as rock or, for that matter, as folk, blues, jazz, or country, though each of these influenced it. Deadheads, as the fans of the Grateful Dead call themselves, followed the band from venue to venue from 1965 through 1995, when the band's lead guitarist Jerry Garcia died and the members of the band stopped playing together …

Friendship: Structure and Context
Sociologists have contributed to the friendship literature by examining how friendships vary according to individuals' locations in the social structure, studying the structural characteristics of friendship networks, and, with renewed focus in the 1990s, theorizing about how friendships are affected by the contexts in which they are embedded. This entry reviews the research on how structural location, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual or…
Building a life note-by-note: Music and the life course
Music is an omnipresent component of many people's lives. On an individual level it is used to set moods, mark milestones, and connect to one's personal history. At a collective level music marks the concerns of cultural heritage, national holidays and days of remembrance, and brings people together by serving as a conduit to engage in fellowship, as well as an immediate point of shared interest or experience that helps to form bonds. While popul…
Friendship during the Later Years
Friends are important during later adulthood in many ways, contributing to psychological well‐being, physical health, and even longevity, and serving as sources of affection and social support. This entry discusses current and past trends in research on older adult friendships, including theoretical, substantive, and methodological content, critiques the current state of the literature in these areas, and suggests future agendas for each of them.…
Popular Music across the Life Course
Although popular music subcultures among youth have been studied extensively, and recently researchers have examined the continued involvement of these same fans in these subcultures as they age, a life‐course perspective has not been brought to bear on this topic. In this entry, the authors outline the questions that might be addressed by using a life‐course perspective to study music consumption and production. In so doing, the authors distingu…
Subculture, Sociology of
Aging, Media, and Culture
The intersections of aging, media, and culture are under-explored given trends in population aging, rapid increases in the mediation of everyday life, and the growing cultural significance of media consumption at the global level. This book brings together an international collection of critical scholars, both well-established and up-and-coming, from the various academic disciplines that share a common interest in the future study of aging and me…

Editing Personal Relationships
This issue is the last my editorial team will produce. Lorne Campbell and his associate editors have been receiving new submissions since June 1, 2008, and the next issue will be filled with manuscripts they have processed since that time. Soon after I first began receiving new submissions on June 1, 2005, Distinguished Scholar Harry Reis (Personal Relationships, Vol. 14, Issue 1, March 2007) responded to an email from me by asking a question pro…

Becoming an Interdisciplinary and International Journal
Friendship: Structure and Context
Although since the days of Aristotle, Cicero, and Plato philosophers have been pondering the qualities of ideal friendship, proposing typologies of categories and functions of friendship, and analyzing the role of friendship in maintaining a stable society, very few sociologists conducted empirical research focused specifically on friendship before the late 1960s (for an exception, see Williams 1959). The friendship literature has thus developed …
Friendship during the Later Years
Gerontologists were responsible for much of the early scholarship on adult friendship and continue to focus more attention on it than other researchers do. This is probably due to their historical preoccupation with theoretical questions regarding older adults’ social integration, engagement, and psychological well‐being. Friends are, however, important during later adulthood in many other ways as well, serving as sources of affection and social …

Gender‐of‐author differences in study design of older adult friendship surveys
This research extends literature documenting gender differences in choice of quantitative or qualitative methods by examining whether men and women make different decisions regarding study design within one type of quantitative method—survey research. The population consists of 117 surveys (1960–1999) of older adults about friendship. We find that the use of communal methods, especially by women scholars, increased over time, and researchers who …

An Integrative Conceptual Framework for Friendship Research
In light of the increase in the number and rigor of studies on adult friendship and the tendency of kin and neighbor relationships to have become more structurally similar to friendship, this is a crucial juncture at which to pause and assess what we know and do not know about adult friendship, to begin a needed theoretical synthesis, to identify gaps in the literature and to produce guidelines for future research. The purpose of this article is …

Aging Well With Friends and Family
Aging encourages people to enhance their friend and family relationships. In general, the elderly tend to have more heterogeneity in relationships as they grow older. They depend on these relationships for instrumental, financial and emotional support. As a result, older adults who have many friends and have close ties with their families are more socially and psychologically well-adjusted than those who are alienated from their networks
The Long-Term Evolution of the Family Structure of Teenage and Older Mothers
Research into the evolution of the, family structure is important in understanding the consequences of teenage motherhood. In this longitudinal study of black, urban mothers in Woodlawn, a Chicago community, we compare 15 years of family evolution of teenage and older mothers. Teenage mothers not only frequently begin child rearing as the only adult at home but also are at high risk of becoming the only adult and remaining so as long as 15 years …

The Script of Life in Modern Society: Entry into Adulthood in a Changing World
Social scientists generally agree that relations between the different life stages in advanced industrial societies are changing. Far less agreement exists over how to interpret these changes. Using an innovative approach to the study of life course, Marlis Buchmann explores the changes in educational, occupational, and family careers that threaten an end to familiar life patterns characteristic of the mid-twentieth century

Structural predictors of problematic friendship in later life
The purpose of this study was to examine the constraining and facilitating effects of social structural position (age, sex, race, class, financial sufficiency, and number of friends) on opportunities for friendship. We hypothesized that the greater the number of people who share a given social structural location and the more access they have to situations where it is possible to meet new people, the less likely they are to have problematic frien…
