  • Science in Washington, DC An Introduction to Memorials (A Pictorial Essay)

    Open Access•Istvan Hargittai, Magdolna Hargittai•ARTICLE•European Review•2023•References: 1

There are profound expressions of remembrance of science and scientists, innovators and educators in Washington, DC. In this article, we survey the outdoor memorials and also include a few indoor memorials, if they are accessible to the public. There appears to be some predominance of physics and physicists, especially related to electricity among the memorials, but other areas of science are also represented. British and European scientists pred…

  • His Fate Was Larger than Himself

    Open Access•Istvan Hargittai•ARTICLE•European Review•2021•Cited by: 1

The world-renowned physicist Andrei D. Sakharov (1921–1989) was ‘the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb’ and, as such, an architect of the Soviet superpower. He developed into a fierce fighter for human rights, distinguished by the Nobel Peace Prize. In his words, ‘my fate was larger than what would have followed from my personality. I was merely trying to be worthy of my fate.’ 1 His life and career provide thought-provoking lessons and is worth…

  • Symmetry in chemistry

    Open Access•Magdolna Hargittai, Istvan Hargittai•ARTICLE•European Review•2005•References: 2

Symmetry and chemistry have been in a fruitful interplay, initially in spectroscopy and crystallography, lately in more traditional domains of chemistry, such as reactivity and conformational analysis. A simple phenomenological approach suffices to get an idea about the symmetries of molecules whereas group theoretical approach greatly facilitates the understanding of molecular vibrations, electronic structure, and the mechanism of chemical react…

  • The Loom of God

    Istvan Hargittai, Clifford A Pickover•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1998

From the mysterious cult of Pythagoras, to the awesome mechanics of Stonehenge, to the fearsome gargoyles and glorious fractals created on the computer screens of today, Pickover evokes the power of numbers and their connection with the search for the ultimate meaning of the universe. We learn that individuals through the ages have conjured numbers to predict the end of the world, to raise the dead, to find love, and to sway the outcome of wars. …

    Istvan Hargittai, Rudolf Arnheim•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1997

Rudolf Arnheim's great forte is his ability to illuminate the perceptual processes that go into the making and reception of artworks - painting, sculpture, architecture, and film. Over the years, his pioneering mode of 'reading' art from a unique scientific/philosophic perspective has garnered him an established and devoted audience. That audience will take pleasure in Arnheim's most recent collection of essays, one that covers a range of topics …
