    German Idealism still dominates most approaches in theoretical biology. This has led to a conception of organisms as tightly regulated self-forming systems where the demands of the whole organism dominate how the parts are coordinated.     This paper studies the hybridization practices of plant breeder Luther Burbank in order to better understand how the gene theory of heredity emerged from late nineteenth and early twentieth century spatial practices.     While some critics have sought to explain the role of disasters in entertainment media by making recourse to the concept of fantasy, we suggest a different approach. Focusing on superhero comic books, we outline what we call a "logic of the anomalous."
