A Modal Theory of Metaphor
All metaphors have the logical form “metaphorically, Fx”. “Metaphorically” is a modal operator. If “F” literally denotes the property F and metaphorically denotes the property G, “Metaphorically, Fx” says that x is G in reality because in its home world (W x ) it is F, when (1) x being F is manifest in W x (2) it is a law of W x that being F causes being G (3) being G in W x is essential to x, hence it is G in all possible worlds. For example, Em…

Katz and Wittgenstein
1. Katz presents three proofs that sense is independent of use: baby-talk, derogatory terms, and megasentences. 'Urine' and 'pee-pee', he says, have one sense but different uses. I agree that they have the same sense, but 'pee-pee' in Baby-English and 'urine' in standard-English, like 'chile' (in Black-English) and 'child', have the same use too. Baby-English is a dialect; speaking it, you say 'pee-pee' just where in standard-English you would sa…

Understanding Wittgenstein
Facts, Freedom and Foreknowledge
Is God's foreknowledge compatible with human freedom? One of the most attractive attempts to reconcile the two is the Ockhamistic view, which subscribes not only to human freedom and divine omniscience, but retains our most fundamental intuitions concerning God and time: that the past is immutable, that God exists and acts in time, and that there is no backward causation. In order to achieve all that, Ockhamists (I) distinguish ‘hard facts’ about…
Looking Out for Number One
More often than not, people try to achieve a state which they believe will be good for them. Our society is based on the belief that prudential, or egoistic, action is rational and almost self-justifying; an action should benefit its agent. For this belief to be justified, there must be a clear distinction between what is, and what is not, that very same agent. In a number of articles published over the last twenty years' I have argued, however, …

1. The Problem It is customary, in modern intensional semantics, to identify statements (meanings of sentences) with sets of possible worlds.
