  • The priest, the crofters, and the Uist rocket range

    Open Access•Neil Bruce, Neil D B Bruce•ARTICLE•The Innes Review•2024

This study examines the relationship between land, power, and cultural identity in the Uists, focusing on the mid-twentieth century when a proposed rocket range threatened the Gaelic culture. The Rev. John Morrison, a local priest, led a media campaign to protect the community’s heritage, also commissioning a sculpture of ‘Our Lady of the Isles’ and supporting wayside shrines as symbols of resistance. These monuments embody the community’s resili…

  • The Paupers, the Gallant Colonel and the Fourth Estate: Press Reporting of the Arrival of Barra Highlanders on the Scottish Mainland

    Open Access•Neil Bruce, Neil C Bruce•ARTICLE•Northern Scotland•2022•Cited by: 1

Destitute islanders from Barra arrived on the Scottish mainland in late 1850 following successive failures of the island's annual potato crop. Their presence, behaviour and the actions of their erstwhile proprietor, Colonel John Gordon of Cluny garnered newspaper coverage and comment. During the previous five years, these same, predominantly Lowland papers reported on how proprietors, the state and the public reacted to the humanitarian crisis as…

  • Take up the Man and lay down the Boy’: Defining Rural Childhood in Northern Scotland during the Enlightenment

Open Access•Elizabeth Ritchie, Neil Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Northern Scotland•2021

Despite the theorising of Enlightenment and Romantic thinkers, no crystallised notion of childhood was particularly widespread or applied in the rural north. However, the evidence does suggest gradual phases, contingent on class, gender and circumstance, which tended to commence between the ages of five and eight and were distinguished by formal education or starting to assist in the family economy in a meaningful way. At the other end of childho…

  • Exploring the Relationship between Urban Quiet Areas and Perceived Restorative Benefits

    Open Access•Sarah R Payne, Neil Bruce•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 3

To help mitigate the adverse health impacts of environmental noise, European cities are recommended to identify urban quiet areas for preservation. Procedures for identifying urban quiet areas vary across cities and between countries, and little is known of the strength of the salutogenic (health-promoting) benefits they may provide. Taking a multi-site approach, this study examines the potential of three sites as urban quiet areas and their asso…

real income-earning business activities of firms rather than the financial ones. Furthermore, it has virtually ignored the implications of the financial structure of the firm for the neutrality of flow-of-funds taxation of both real and financial activities of the firm in a model of the firm in which the financial structure has been explicitly included. We shall be particularly concerned with the sorts of flow-of-funds tax systems suggested by th…

  • Cost-Benefit Criteria and the Compensation Principle in Evaluating Small Projects

    Neil Bruce, Richard G Harris•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The use of the compensation principle in cost-benefit analysis as a means of separating the efficiency and distributional effects of a project is theoretically suspect for a number of reasons. One difficulty is the lack of a necessary and sufficient criterion for determining that a compensation test is passed in an economy where consumers' and producers' prices are not the same. For this paper we establish such a criterion for projects that are s…

  • The IS-LM Model of Macroeconomic Equilibrium and the Monetarist Controversy

    Neil Bruce•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1977•References: 6

This paper highlights the issue of whether government bonds are net wealth as an important one in the monetarist controversy. In particular it is shown that the standard IS-LM model and its conclusions arise as a special case of a more general macroeconomic model which results when government bonds are fully perceived as collective wealth. When, however, the tax liabilities required to service that debt are fully capitalized, a model with monetar…
