Schachter, Jacquelyn
Dr. Jacquelyn Schachter contributed extensively to pioneering basic research on second language acquisition (SLA) in the 1970s and 1980s as the field was becoming independent of its previous role as a subsidiary to language teaching. In addition to her research, Schachter contributed to the expansion of the field by extensive editing of volumes of collected papers, conference proceedings, and periodicals.

This proposal is made on the basis of developmental and performance parallels among: the speech continuum of Singapore English (acrolect, mesolect and basilect), dialectal variation in New York City, and the evidence from second-language development and use. This paper particularly emphasize…
The Other Tongue
On the analysis of surface nouns
On the Explanation of Phonic Interference1
The question as to what information is of fundamental importance in the construction of phonological tasks in a course in a foreign language is raised and an attempt is made to indicate an answer with respect to a particular problem encountered by native speakers of Japanese and Russian in learning English. Conventional phonemics and contrastive analysis are found deficient as bases for the explanation of this problem and generative phonology is …
