A Phrasal Movement Analysis of the Najdi Arabic Pronominal Possessive DP
This paper mainly investigates the syntactic structure of possessive pronominal noun phrases in Najdi Arabic (henceforth, NA) formed through the use of pronominal possessors. Unlike the traditional viewpoint in Semitic syntax, where pronominal possessors are treated as heads instantiating their own maximal projections (Shlonsky, 1997; Alrasheedi, 2019), the paper argues that pronominal possessors are DPs in the complement position of the NP. In l…
The Effect of Prefixation on Syllable Structure in Najdi Arabic
This study investigates the effect of prefixation on the syllable and syllabification in Najdi Arabic. It mainly addresses the role of prefixation on the syllable in this variety of Arabic, providing a prosodic representation of it within the context of rule-based phonology. The paper provides a review of the phonological processes that deal with prefixation phenomena in Najdi Arabic, whose domains of application are somewhat subject to syllabifi…
Flaps and Trills in Najdi and Hijazi Arabic
This study is an investigation of flaps and trills in Najdi and Hijazi Arabic, which are the most spoken Arabic varieties in Saudi Arabia. It focuses on how flaps and trills behave in relation to vowels and consonants in the two varieties of Arabic. The data in this study were collected from four Hijazi and five Najdi participants. A total number of 730 sentences were read by the participants. It was found that /r/, which is the underlying phonem…
ɸ-agreement within Construct State in Jordanian Arabic
This paper shows that the head noun of the Construct State may ɸ-agree (in Number and Gender) with the accompanying DP associate in Jordanian Arabic. When it occurs, this agreement is, however, only invoked when the DP associate is referential (e.g., galam ʔil-walad ‘the boy’s pen’> galam uh i ʔil-walad i , but barbiiʃ ʔil-ʁaaz ‘the gas pipe’> *barbiiʃ -uh i ʔil-ʁaaz i ). The paper provides a syntactic account of this observation which clearly de…
