Grammaticalisation of ʔelħi
This paper explores the linguistic properties of a discourse variant of the temporal adverb ʔelħi:n, used in Haili Dialect of Najdi Arabic (HA). Maintaining the characteristic of co-occurring clause-initially, and examining lexical/discoursal articulated structures, ʔelħi:n has developed a conventionalized discourse use, turning its morphology into a discourse particle that expresses a degree of speaker’s attitude. ʔelħi:n has undergone a process…
Grammaticalisation of Raħ in Dialectal Arabic
The lexical item raħ has undergone two phases of grammaticalisation, from a lexical item used as a lexical verb to a temporal-functional particle T-raħ, and further to a discourse-functional particle D-raħ. Syntactic diagnostics show that both T-raħ and D-raħ have developed properties of head status, adopting conventional Minimalist and Cartographic principles (Chomsky, 2000; Rizzi, 1997; Frascarelli & Hinterhölzl, 2007), where evidence is deduce…
PF-Representation of Tense Feature on DPs
This research revises, develops and offers empirical evidence to two assumptions discussed in Pesetsky & Torrego’s (2007) theory which claims that tense feature [T] is associated with and expressed on DPs in syntax. Investigating the syntax of a T-marker tau, used in Najdi Arabic, in contexts where tau interacts with DPs in the spine of the clause, empirical evidence is provided that [T] assumed to be associated with DPs is generated in syntax an…
Derivation and Interpretation of Expressiveness Devices in North Hail Arabic
This paper investigates the interpretive properties of what are termed expressiveness devices, characterised as clitic, pronoun and demonstrative. In what seems to be cases of multiple expression of a single argument, the proposed investigation involves generative syntactic analyses to the interaction of a set of expressiveness devices with an associate DP, accounting for their interpretation at both LF and PF interfaces (Chomsky, 1995 et seq). E…
