Female voices and bodies in “Le Printemps”
Le Printemps deserves to feature in comparative literature courses on love poetry. To encourage my colleagues to take up this challenge, I provide an annotated English translation, for university students, of four poems from the collection. The two sonnets and two longer poems all share a focus either on the female voice, or on a female body without a voice. I ask whether, when d’Aubigné lends his voice to a female character – whether his wife or…

Louise Bourgeois , Midwife to the Queen of France
Louise Bourgeois’s works deserve to be far better known today on several counts. She was the first practising midwife in Europe to publish an account of her professional experiences, and also one of the rare French women of her age to write in a professional rather than literary capacity. Her case histories provide valuable insights into women’s medicine and family life at both the royal court (where she attended all the deliveries of Marie de’ M…

Exchanges Between Medical and Literary Discourses in the French Renaissance
Exchanges between medical and literary discourses in the French Renaissance: comparing the fascination with “des amas et pieces de chair informes” in Montaigne’s Essais and Joubert’s Erreurs populaires. Using Montaigne’s chapter “De l’oisiveté” as a point of departure, this article assesses the convergence of literary and medical discourses, and the significance of book-historical research. Since the “linguistic turn”, historians increasingly exa…

Conceiving the Old Regime. Pronatalism and the Politics of Reproduction in Early Modern France
Leslie Tuttle’s book takes as its starting point one edict issued in 1666 and revoked seventeen years later: Louis XIV’s (or, more accurately Colbert’s) Edict on Marriage, which represented a first attempt by the French state to promote a pro-natalist policy through offering fiscal privileges or financial benefits to families with at least ten living children, none in holy orders. Around this single, short-lived measure, however, Tuttle builds a …
