  • John H. Zammito. The Gestation of German Biology: Philosophy and Physiology from Stahl to Schelling

    Open Access•Thomas Broman•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

How different was the scientific study of life in the eighteenth century from that of the nineteenth century? This question has long been accorded special significance owing to the nearly simultaneous appearance of the word “biology” in the writings of several naturalists in the years immediately surrounding 1800. New word, new science, a new modernity—the debut of “biology” invokes one of history’s most iconic moments, with faint echoes of revol…

  • The profits and perils of publicity: Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung , the Thurn und Taxis Post, and the periodical trade at the end of the eighteenth century

    Open Access•Thomas Broman•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2015

Recent historiography on the growth of periodical publishing has emphasized newspapers and journals as constituents of an emergent communications system in early modern Europe. This system comprised the newspapers, journals and other publications that contributed its content, and also the postal systems that were the principal method of distributing that content. This article describes how the growth of this system in central Europe was supported…

  • The History of Medicine

Thomas Broman•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2015

It must have been at least a dozen or more years since a publisher approached me about writing a history of medicine textbook covering the same time span as my undergraduate survey course, which improbably ranges from Antiquity to the near-present. I laughed the idea off, saying that there would be little market for such a book, certainly not as a text for university-level courses in history of medicine, most of which prudently focus on a narrowe…

INTRODUCTION: WONDROUS NEWSAmong celestial phenomena, comets may be rivalled only by eclipses for the vividness their appearance and their traditional role portents. This was certainly true the comet that appeared shortly before dawn on 14 November 1680. One German observer took note its terrible appearance, adding that it seemed as though the heavens were burning, or if the very air was on fire. In England, where comets were serious business, es…

  • Metaphysics for an Enlightened Public: The Controversy over Monads in Germany, 1746-1748

    Thomas Broman•ARTICLE•Isis•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This essay analyzes the controversy that attended the prize essay question on monads proposed by the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1746. The controversy was first touched off by an anonymous pamphlet published by the mathematician Leonhard Euler, the academy's most well known member, that attacked the doctrine of monads. It peaked with the awarding of the prize to Johann Heinrich Gottlob Justi, whose winning essay closely followed Euler's argumen…

  • The Semblance of Transparency: Expertise as a Social Good and an Ideology in Enlightened Societies

    Thomas Broman•ARTICLE•Osiris•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Our modern idea of scientific expertise is compounded from two historically distinct elements: occupational expertise and the expertise claimed by scientists as privileged knowers of truths about the world. This article examines the historical roots of these two kinds of expertise in terms of the conceptual separation of theory and practice and the social status of scholars. In the Enlightenment, the value of theoretical knowledge began to be mea…

  • Introduction: Some Preliminary Considerations on Science and Civil Society

    Thomas Broman, Thomas H Broman•ARTICLE•Osiris•2002•Cited by: 2

Until now, the interest displayed in civil society by historians and political scientists has not found much echo among historians of science. This is regrettable, because the doctrine of civil society offers historians of science a means of investigating the relationship between the forms of social life characteristic of civil society (voluntary associations, civic institutions, etc.) and engagement with science. The doctrine of civil society al…
