The year 2023 marks professional social work's quasquicentennial: the 125th anniversary of our profession since the first social work classes were offered in the summer of 1898 at Columbia University. The profession has grown in its reach across many human service sectors over all these years creating opportunities for those who want to serve their communities in myriad and impactful ways. Social Work Educators’ Opportunities During Covid-19
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 resulted in major disruption for social work education, as many teachers and programs shifted from on-campus classes to remote or blended teaching using digital technologies. Social work educators have an opportunity to apply the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to meet the needs of students and communities in ways that are grounded in our professional values. Due to the pandemic, many students and faculty …
Professional Collaboration Networks as a Social Work Research Practice Innovation
In professional disciplines, gaps often exist between research and practice. Drug Use, Self-Efficacy, and Coping Skills Among People with Concurrent Substance Abuse and Personality Disorders
This study investigated drug use antecedents, abstinence self-efficacy and coping skills among people with concurrent substance abuse and personality disorders. Fifty inpatients with recent polydrug abuse were divided into two groups based upon the presence (PD) or absence (NPD) of a personality disorder. The PD group reported more often using drugs when experiencing unpleasant emotions, physical discomfort, and conflict with others. They also re…
Protecting Children
In this study, difficulties that women with alcohol problems and victimization experiences might have protecting their children from victimization were investigated. Mothers of children (ages 3-17) were recruited from a longitudinal study of women, alcohol problems, and victimization; women came from alcohol treatment programs, battered women's shelters, mental health clinics, drinking and driving programs, and a random household sample. Hypothet…
Two Strikes Against Them
The relationship between poverty and substance abuse is complex and mitigated by many factors. While poverty is a risk factor for adolescent substance abuse, there is little research documenting the relationship beyond adolescence. Using a systematic sample of 1,268 cases from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study investigated whether there are synergistic, intergenerational effects of poverty and alcoholism. Results suggest that …

Although social work has largely abdicated its historical role in the field of corrections, the need for social workers in correctional institutions is greater than ever as the number of incarcerated individuals soars. Fieldwork experiences in these settings can provide rich and challenging educational opportunities for students, while preparing them for future employment. Many faculty are unfamiliar with correctional facilities however, and few …
