Religion, Community, and Slavery on the Colonial Southern Frontier
This book tells the story of Ebenezer, a frontier community in colonial Georgia founded by a mountain community fleeing religious persecution in its native Salzburg. This study traces the lives of the settlers from the alpine world they left behind to their struggle for survival on the southern frontier of British America. Exploring their encounters with African and indigenous peoples with whom they had had no previous contact, this book examines…

The Rise of the Public in Enlightenment Europe
James Melton's lucid and accessible 2001 study examines the rise of 'the public' in eighteenth-century Europe. A work of comparative synthesis focusing on England, France and the German-speaking territories, this was the first book-length, critical reassessment of what Habermas termed the 'bourgeois public sphere'. During the Enlightenment the Public assumed a new significance as governments came to recognise the power of public opinion in politi…

From Folk History to Structural History: Otto Brunner (1898-1982) and the Radical-Conservative Roots of German Social History
Whether we choose to view social history as a salutary antidote to the elitism of traditional historical narrative, or, with Gertrude Himmelfarb, as a symptom of cultural and political decline, the writing of social history is usually identified with the political Left. There is ample evidence to support this judgment. Visions of History, a volume of interviews edited in 1984 by the Mid-Atlantic Radical Historians Organization, includes testimoni…
Land and Lordship: Structures of Governance in Medieval Austria
Otto Brunner contends that prevailing notions of medieval social and constitutional history had been shaped by the nineteenth-century nation and its liberal order. Whereas a sharp distinction between the public and the private might be appropriate to descriptions of contemporary society, such a dichotomy could not be projected back onto the Middle Ages. Focusing particularly on forms of lordship in late medieval Austria, Brunner found neither a s…

From Enlightenment to Revolution: Hertzberg, Schlözer, and the Problem of Despotism in the Late Aufklärung
That many German intellectuals greeted the French Revolution with enthusiasm, but showed little interest in importing it across the Rhine, is a well-known paradox in German history. For Jacques Droz this paradox resulted from the preoccupation of most German intellectuals with the purely ethical implications of the Revolution—in other words, the Germans dealt with the Revolution in the realm of thought but ignored it in the realm of politics. Beh…
