  • Semiotic analysis of symbolic logic using tagmemic theory: With Implications for Analytic Philosophy

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 10

This article uses tagmemic theory as a semiotic framework to analyze symbolic logic. It attends particularly to the issue of context for meaning and the role of personal observer/participants. It focuses on formal languages, which employ no ordinary words and from one point of view have "no meaning." Attention to the context and the theorists who deploy these languages shows that formal languages have meanings at a higher level, colored by the pu…

  • Semiotic analysis of the observer in relativity, quantum mechanics, and a possible theory of everything

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Semiotic analysis of the role of the observer in the theory of relativity and in quantum mechanics shows the semiotic function of basic symmetries, such as symmetries under translation and rotation. How can semiotics be relevant to theories in physics? It is always human beings who form the theories. In the process of theory formation and communication, they rely on semiotic systems. Included among these systems is the semiotics involved in our p…

  • Information-theoretic confirmation of semiotic structures

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013•Cited by: 1

Information theory indirectly confirms some fundamental structures in semiotics. By offering quantitative criteria for efficient transmission of data, it suggests by analogy ways of thinking about efficient communication in language and other media. The criterion in information theory for maximal capacity for information at the source leads to preference for independent data, which can be generalized to the semiotic principle of approximate indep…

  • An information-based semiotic analysis of theories concerning theories

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013•Cited by: 2

A model of semiotic theory informed by information theory can be adapted to provide a simple theory concerning theories, and to model changes in theories over time. The model appropriates from tagmemic theory the fundamental features of contrast, variation, and distribution that characterize emic units. It then applies these features to second-order theories about theories. The specification of behavior of emic units at this second-order level pu…

  • A framework for discourse analysis: The components of a discourse, from a tagmemic viewpoint

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•1982•Cited by: 2

People have been analyzing discourses, in some sense, for as long as they have been speaking. They have done so without the help of linguists, literary critics, or their theories. But a theoretical framework can still perform a service in making explicit what is normally implicit. In this paper, I will attempt to build a framework for classifying and cataloguing everything that goes on in the production and comprehension of discourses. With minor…

  • Hierarchy in discourse analysis: A revision of tagmemics

    Open Access•Vern S Poythre, Vern S Poythress•ARTICLE•Semiotica•1982•Cited by: 1

What is a good framework for discourse analysis? A good set of structures for discourse analysis will be capable of capturing in its 'net' nearly everything that goes on in discourse. In this article I shall be drawing on a previous article that provides the broad framework for such analysis (Poythress 1982). Here I shall be concerned with explicating the role of hierarchy in discourse. The general principles will be illustrated using Mark 4:30-3…
