    Open Access•D B Harden, Jocelyn M C Toynbee•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1959

Lord Rothschild's family has possessed, since the middle of the nineteenth century, one of the most interesting and important extant Roman cut glasses–the famous glass cup with metal mounts, the glass portion of which bears in open-work relief-cutting an elaborate rendering of the scene of the death of Lycurgus, mythical king of the Edoni, at the hands of the Dionysiac rout (pis. LIXLXIV; figs. 1-2). It is not known exactly when the vase was acqu…

  • VI.— The Hunting Baths at Lepcis Magna

    Open Access•J B Ward Perkins, Jocelyn M C Toynbee et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1949

The Hunting Baths at Lepcis Magna lie on the western fringes of the town, about 100 yards from the sea-shore and about half-way between the mouth of the Wadi er-Saf, which formed the western boundary of the city at its fullest extent, and the defensive wall which enclosed the more compact late-Imperial city. It was found and cleared in 1932–3, under the direction of the late Professor Giacomo Guidi. He was at the time already engaged on the excav…

When they struck coins of unusually large size, such as the 50-litra Demareteia, to take the most obvious example, they app…

  • The Classics in War-time

    Open Access•Jocelyn M C Toynbee•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1943

From 29 August to 5 September 1942, some four hundred and fifty persons, members of the Hellenic and Roman Societies and of the Classical Association and their friends, met in conference in Oxford to hear lectures, papers and discussions and to study special exhibitions of classical MSS, rare printed books and photographs and the cream of the Evans bequest of ancient coins. No one could doubt the motive which had brought them there, as they flock…

  • The Dominican Nuns of Saint-Jacques

    Open Access•Jocelyn M C Toynbee•ARTICLE•Blackfriars•1937

Is intellectual work compatible with the religious life? According to St. Thomas Aquinas a life of contemplation and asceticism normally demands it. Intellectual activity is closely bound up with contemplation and the teaching apostolate. Study is not just idle curiosity; for it springs from a love of all truths included in the Supreme Truth, in the Being Whose essence is Truth: God. Love of God demands contemplation, and contemplation, in its tu…
