The Quality of Adolescent Friendships: Long Term Effects
While differing in etiological emphasis, a variety of theoretical perspectives seem to coalesce around the notion that youthful friendships are "good" for development. Sociometric studies have documented that low status youth are at risk for a variety of negative outcomes, but there has been little longitudinal research focused on the qualities of youths' relations with peers. We conducted interviews focusing on adolescents' relations with their …
Attitudes toward Childbearing among Young Parents
H. Theodore Groat, Peggy C. Giordano, Stephen A. Cernkovich, M. D. Pugh, Steven P. Swinford, Attitudes toward Childbearing among Young Parents, Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 59, No. 3 (Aug., 1997), pp. 568-581
Delinquency as a Risk Factor in Teenage Pregnancy
Drawing upon longitudinal data collected from the same boys and girls in their early (13–14) and later (18–19) years of adolescence, this research models age at sexual debut, contraceptive risk-taking, and teenage pregnancy on the basis of family background and delinquency involvement during the early years of adolescence. The data also allow for control over the influence of social class while studying the effects of race, and vice-versa. Regres…

A Cost-Effectiveness Study of Clinical Methods of Birth Control: With Special Reference to Puerto Rico
Labor force participation and family formation: A study of working mothers
Drawing upon a sample of 638 mothers aged 18 to 40, with at least some marital work experience, significant associations were found between the extent, kind, and timing of employment and a series of family formation variables. Generally lower fertility, longer first birth intervals, and earlier use of birth control were associated with the longest work durations, the highest status jobs, and work before the birth of the first child. The data fail…
Dimensions of Family Alienation in the Marital Dyad
Consensus in the Marital Dyad: Couples' Perceptions of Contraception, Communication, and Family Life
The present study was based on data collected (separately for husbands and wives) from 365 couples to determine levels of consensus on a series of variables related to the family forming process. Following Scheff (1967), consensus was operationalized as both agreement and coorientation in the marital dyad. The data generally indicated low levels of consensus on such variables as contraceptive efficacy, desired family size, child spacing, unwanted…
Alienation antecedents of unwanted fertility: A longitudinal study
Women high in alienation may in a sense be victimized by a higher probability of having unwanted pregnancies than women low in alienation. From this perspective high alienation may be concomitant with a sense of (at most) going through the motions of family planning with a rather low confidence that ones ability will suffice to achieve the desired goal and a tendency therefore not to be particularly involved in the mechanisms of family planning. …
Contraceptive Nonconformity among Catholics
Meaningful differences between Catholics and non-Catholics as to contraceptive behavior are declining among the young. A survey of 412 white Catholic women aged 20-44 showed that 79% of the 18-24 age group were practicing methods of contraception prescribed by the Church. Use of proscribed contraception among these women was correlated with the following factors: 1) age; 2) number of children desired as related with present number of children; 3)…
Alienation Predictors of Differential Fertility: A Longitudinal Study
To explore the direction of causality in alienation and fertility relationships, longitudinal data were collected from 336 mothers in the Toledo metropolitn area. The results, based on analysis of changes over an eight-year time interval, supported the view that conditions of alienation are antecedent to and generative of high levels of fertility
Social Class Correlates of Stability and Change in Levels of Alienation: A Longitudinal Study
Identical allenation items were used on questionnaires administered to 334 subjects in 1963 and again in 1971. Drawing upon the variables of powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, and social isolation, an analysis was made of stability and change in alienation scores. The direction of change was toward disproportionate increases over decreases, with the largest increase occurring for normlessness. Differential educational and occupational …

Social Class and Alienation Correlates of Protestant Fertility
Alienation Correlates of Catholic Fertility
Alienation profiles are used as a means of unifying a series of cognitive conditions related to motivational and control-relevant dimensions of family size among a sample of Catholic mothers. Through cumulative scaling of powerlessness, meaninglessness, and normlessness, fertility differentials by alienation profiles significantly exceed differentials obtained by the separate alienation measures as well as by combinations of religion and socioeco…

Internal Migration Patterns of a Population Subgroup College Students, 1887-1958
This analysis of interstate migration for college enrolment is based on a series of public and private reports dating from 1887 to 1958. Since 1930, about 20 per cent of all students have left their home states for enrolment elsewhere. The patterns of student migration have changed markedly over the period covered by this study, particularly since World War II, with a large westward migration being the most notable recent development. Patterns of…
