  • Anthropology's Three Ontological Turns

    Open Access•Kathleen Lowrey•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2022•Cited by: 1

More than 'an' ontological turn, during recent decades, anthropology has taken three distinct ontological turns. It has turned away from the human, away from evolution and away from sex. As a result, a lively and prolific anti-anthropology is steadily displacing anthropology. This new work has run the gamut from very interesting to very silly. At this juncture, a return to traditional anthropological approaches would be salutary

  • Shamans, Wives, Families

    Open Access•Kathleen B Lowrey, Kathleen Lowrey•ARTICLE•1700-tal: Nordic Journal for…•2016

In this essay I describe what I have seen elapse over twenty years in the lives (and sometimes deaths) of two shamans and their respective wives in Isoso, an indigenous community of Guarani-speaking people in the Bolivian Chaco. These shamans’ two different kinds of shamanic practice, their two different sorts of marriage, and the two different life-trajectories of their wives resonate with the dual nature of Isoso itself and its historical const…

This essay compares two communities of common origin that now dwell in separate rural lowland South American settings, one in the Bolivian Chaco and the other in the Paraguayan Chaco (maps 1 and 2). South America's Gran Chaco is sparsely populated, averaging one person per three square kilometers (Censo Nacional Indígena [Paraguay], 2002). Nevertheless, the present essay takes as its analytic-theoretical point of departure a phrase invoked by Mic…

  • Alfred Russel Wallace as ancestor figure

    Open Access•Kathleen Lowrey, KATHLEEN BOLLING LOWREY•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The article argues that anthropology might look to Alfred Russel Wallace as an ancestor figure for three reasons. First, it is under‐recognized that he was an accomplished and sympathetic ethnographic fieldworker. Second, evidence is emerging that his intuitions were surer than were Darwin's as to evolutionary mechanisms. Third, he was willing to appear as a “crank” on questions of ontology. These last two issues animate anthropology as we presen…

  • Comparative Studies and the South American Gran Chaco

This article reviews the historical and present prospects of ethnohistorical and ethnographic work in the South American Gran Chaco. Geographically the Chaco is a semi-arid central South American plain, some one million square kilometers in size, encompassing portions of northern Argentina, eastern Bolivia, and western Paraguay. Average rainfall oscillates around 800 mm/yr, with the peripheries being wetter and the central Chaco drier. Some 250,0…

  • Incommensurability and new economic strategies among indigenous and traditional peoples

    Open Access•Kathleen Lowrey•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2008

This article takes as a central problem why both a tiny laboratory and an enormous national park were almost simultaneously established in a remote tropical Bolivian indigenous community (Isoso) in the mid-1990s. Both projects – laboratory and the park – were oriented to non-economic values: the laboratory to those of traditional medicine and culture and the park to those of unspoiled nature. However, Isoseño people were particularly attentive to…

  • Slaves without Masters? Arawakan Dynasties among the Chiriguano (Bolivian Chaco, Sixteenth to Twentieth Centuries)

    Isabelle Combès, Kathleen Lowrey•BOOK•Ethnohistory•2006•Cited by: 22•References: 7

A product of the conquest of an Arawakan population by Tupí-Guaraní migrants, Chiriguano society offers a clear instance of "indigenous hybridity" that has received inadequate scholarly attention. We suggest that the assimilation of the Chiriguano case to Tupí-Guaraní sociopolitical models demonstrates a process of "Guaranization" that has influenced scholars as much as-if not more than-the Chiriguano themselves. By means of an ethnohistorical an…

    Open Access•Kathleen B Lowrey, Kathleen Lowrey•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 24

This article draws on fieldwork carried out in a Guaraní-speaking community in the Bolivian Chaco - Isoso - between 1997 and 2000. At the time, some Isoseño people were employed in urban-headquartered projects that revolved around Isoso's environment, culture, or identity and that were funded multilaterally by grants, loans, or other foreign aid. The article describes a set of fantastic discourses circulating in rural Isoso that seem to compare a…

  • Bolivia Multiétnico y Pluricultural, Ten Years Later

    Kathleen Lowrey•ARTICLE•Latin American and Caribbean…•2006•Cited by: 13•References: 8

This essay treats the rise of separatist sentiment in lowland Bolivia, a region of the country that is dominated by whites rather than Indians. It addresses antecedents of that sentiment that stretch back to the start of the 20th century, and the surprising way in which the 1990s rhetoric of ‘multiculturalism’ and ethnic rights has been seized upon by this self-described minority within the majority-indigenous nation of Bolivia. Finally, it exami…
