  • This Is Not a Jeremiad

    Open Access•Sabine Broeck•ARTICLE•Amerikastudien/American Studies•2021

This will not be about the manifold interconnected features of the settler colonial system and society that the United States has been since its inception (King), but about one of its constitutive machineries: enslavism. In earlier work, I have coined this term to address the humiliate-ability, the enslave-ability, the rape-ability, the abuse-ability, and the ship-ability of Black people in the discourses and violent practices that have shaped U.S…

  • Gender and the Abjection of Blackness

Sabine Broeck•BOOK•Gender and the Abjection of…•2018

An anti-racist critique of gender studies as a field. In Gender and the Abjection of Blackness , Sabine Broeck argues that gender studies as a mostly white field has taken insufficient account of Black contributions, and that more than being an ethnocentric limitation or blind spot, this has represented a structural anti-Blackness in the field. Engaging with the work of Black feminist authors Sylvia Wynter, Hortense Spillers, and Saidiya Hartman,…

  • Black Knowledges/Black Struggles

    Jason R Ambroise, Sabine Broeck•BOOK•Black Knowledges/Black Struggles•2015

This book explores the central but often critically neglected role of knowledge and epistemic formations within social movements for Black ‘freedom’ and emancipation. The collection examines the structural subjugation and condemnation of Black African and Afro-mixed descent peoples globally within the past 500 years of trans-Atlantic societies of Western modernity, doing so in connection to the population's dehumanization and/or invisibilization …

  • Dekoloniale Entbindung.

  • The Cambridge History of African American Literature

    Open Access•Jerry W Ward, F Irele et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge History of African…•2011

The first major twenty-first century history of four hundred years of black writing, The Cambridge History of African American Literature presents a comprehensive overview of the literary traditions, oral and print, of African-descended peoples in the United States. Expert contributors, drawn from the United States and beyond, emphasise the dual nature of each text discussed as a work of art created by an individual and as a response to unfolding…

  • Re-reading de Beauvoir after race

    Sabine Broeck•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This article reads Simone de Beauvoir's Ethics of Ambiguity (2000, [1948]) and The Second Sex (1989, [1949]) in light of recent decolonial critiques of (post) modernity. It situates de Beauvoir's employment of the woman-as-slave analogy within the heated controversies of her political moment. Marxists, Existentialists, Jewish intellectuals and Pan-Africanists, among others, engaged around issues of anti-fascist, anti-colonialist and anti-capitali…

  • American Studies in Germany (Particularly West Germany) Between the Cold War Period and the Early Twenty-First Century - Reminiscences of a Participant Observer

    Sabine Broeck•ARTICLE•Comparative American Studies An…•2008•References: 2

This essay reconsiders the proto-ecological qualities of Wallace Stevens' poetry through a detailed reading of 'Earthy Anecdote', the little riddle poem that opens the writer's first volume, Harmonium. It argues that the poem fulfils a variety of purposes that cannot be all contained by an ecocritical reading: while it may certainly be understood as reflecting Stevens' investment in earth's natural cycles and its unspoiled natural environments, o…

    Sabine Broeck•ARTICLE•Callaloo•2002

    Callaloo - Volume 25, Number 3, Summer 2002
