Commoning practices: The Political Significance of Facts
Within this cluster, which beckons a collective exploration of facts, this contribution hinges upon two overarching discussions. Firstly, it underscores that facts are not self-evident entities independent of human experiences, challenging conventional notions of natural environmental causality. The second discussion posits that the social life and significance of facts in Latin America are determined by what facts do or can potentially do. I exp…
“El Viudo De Pescado”
This is a reflection about how “caring for a dish is caring for the river.” The viudo de pescado (the widower of fish) is an emblematic dish that is part of the fishing and riverside traditions along the río Magdalena in Colombia, South America. The ingredients used to cook the dish, the locations where it is eaten, and the steps taken to protect this tradition illustrate the enormous complexities of environmental justice as seen through the lens…
Speculating on tentacular infrastructures
Trains, water pipes and many other infrastructures whisper, and sometimes even roar. There is the sound of metal gripping water tanks, the echoes of deep wells, the soothing sounds of rivers stifled in irrigation ditches, and the sudden rumble of the train. The visual and audible life of infrastructures reverberates through the landscape of the immense green banana and palm oil plantations of the Zona Bananera, Colombia. Walking what was before a…
Cultivating Justice beyond Law
Thinking about justice beyond law involves understanding justice as a process thatcampesinos(peasants) in Colombia link to aspirations for a good life. I argue that environmental justice draws on distinctive temporalities and spatial scales. By temporality, I refer to how campesinos think about justice as a process to overcome their long history of community injustice, not as a reversal of a single event or action. I also refer to campesinos' eve…
Lo público de la Historia pública en Colombia: Reflexiones desde el Río de la Patria y sus pobladores ribereños
Historical narrations are configured under the particular cover of the gaps between facts and reports of events. Despite these gaps, people participate in history as agents and narrators. This article provides a reflection on the public aspects of academic contributions that analyse the use of the past, memory and history of relationships of the inhabitants of the Magdalena river banks (Rio de la Patria) from an approach of historicity anchored i…
Thinking with (Il)legality: The Ethics of Living with Bonanzas
By thinking with (il)legality, I show the everyday rhythms and tropes of cultivation and mule driving through which peasants explain their engagements with different legal and illegal economies (marijuana, coca, and tourism) on a coastal mountainside in Colombia. I explore how peasants engage in ethical deliberations drawn from everyday practices through which they try to live "the best possible life" in very volatile contexts, while also providi…
Violence and conservation: Beyond unintended consequences and unfortunate coincidences
Beautifying the Slum: Cable Car Fetishism in Cazucá, Colombia
The installation of cable cars as part of slum beautification projects has begun to circulate among politicians, planners and residents as a magical solution that offers social and economic integration to historically marginalized urban areas. This paper analyzes the way in which a cable car project became a fetish for the inhabitants, politicians and planners ofCazucá, a very deprived, abandoned and stigmatized area on the outskirts ofBogotá,Col…
Spatializing Religious Freedom: Inhabiting the Legal Frontier Between Ethnic and National Rights
This article addresses the complex legal endeavour to shape the frontiers between two of the most fundamental liberal rights in multicultural nation states: the right to cultural difference and the right to religious freedom in Colombia. I follow one dispute, between members of the indigenous Arhuaco group who are Evangelical Christians and their indigenous local authorities. This example illuminates longstanding debates surrounding the relations…
Legal Typologies and Topologies: The Construction of Indigenous Alterity and Its Spatialization Within the Colombian Constitutional Court
This article examines the different legal articulations between indigenous typologies and topologies, that is, the relationship between someone classified as an indigenous subject, a grantee of minority rights, and the spatial arrangements such as reservations or ancestral territories considered necessary for indigenous “cultural survival.” I analyze how the jurisprudence of the Colombian Constitutional Court manifests and rests on the diverse co…
Emancipation or Enclosement? The Spatialization of Difference and Urban Ethnic Contestation in Colombia
The focus of this article is a paradox inherent in the political effects of spatial claims undertaken by multicultural policies in many nation states: though territory is considered as one of the primary means of achieving autonomy and self-determination, it is at the same time a mechanism that encloses difference. Through a combination of archival and ethnographic research I study the political effects of binding indigenous people's minority rig…

Deceptive Utopias: Violence, Environmentalism, and the Regulation of Multiculturalism in Colombia
Multiculturalism, constructed as a liberal utopia intended to recognize marginal populations, commonly draws upon deceptive mechanisms that reify the old trope of anthropological “savage slots” (a term borrowed fromTrouillot 2003). Such slots configure the relationship between politics and places: the fixation of ethnicity in a territory and the creation of strong frontiers—both physical and symbolic—between grantees and nongrantees of differenti…
