Kojève’s silence
This paper argues that in his early writings on modern physics, Alexandre Kojève develops a critique of classical metaphysics that compromises his interpretation of Hegel. I aim to show that Kojève's rejection of the classical conception of Being-as a spatially homogeneous uni-totality-renders the end of history impossible. I will contend that Kojève's attempt to reconcile this tension through a distinction between knowledge and truth-asserting b…
Synthesis and analysis
This paper presents Jean Nicod (1893–1924) as a mediator in the dispute between Bergson and Russell. In La géométrie dans le monde sensible (1924), Nicod extensively discusses Bergson’s epistemology focusing on those aspects that Russell critically discusses in The Philosophy of Henri Bergson (1912) and Our Knowledge of the External World (1914). His aim is to establish a middle ground between synthesis and analysis: to show how most of the disag…
Bibliometrics beyond citations
Standard citation-based bibliometric tools have severe limitations when they are applied to periods in the history of science and the humanities before the advent of now-current citation practices. This paper presents an alternative method involving the extracting and analysis of mentions to map and analyze links between scholars and texts in periods that fall outside the scope of citation-based studies. Focusing on one specific discipline in one…
Filter bubbles and guru effects
In this article, we critically reflect on the role of Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson as a public intellectual in an increasingly hybrid, interconnected, and plural public sphere. In today’s attention economy, and in the face of a general climate of scepticism and crisis of expertise, we are faced with the limits of the liberal ideal of the public intellectual who filters information for the public. In fact, we argue, the public intellectua…
Epistemological Questions for a Speculative Pragmatist
This essay will engage in a critical dialogue with Massumi’s concept of speculative pragmatism by reconstructing and interrogating the epistemology and metaphysics it presupposes. First, we will narrate and explicate the metaphysics embedded in the philosophy of speculative pragmatism. Secondly, we will recapitulate Massumi’s conceptualization of speculative pragmatism in his book Semblance and Event (2011). Our reading of this book will lead us …
Big Books in Times of Big Data
Big Books in Times of Big Data examines the stylistics of monumentality by reading novelists, including Karl Ove Knausgård and Elena Ferrante, through the lens of contemporary cultural phenomena such as digitization, quantification, and datafication. Inge Van de Ven engages in a critical reflection on what it means to write a novel over one thousand pages long at a time when enormous and ever-increasing amounts of information are “vying for our e…
The rise and fall of behaviorism
The history of 20th-century American psychology is often depicted as a history of the rise and fall of behaviorism. Although historians disagree about the theoretical and social factors that have contributed to the development of experimental psychology, there is widespread consensus about the growing and (later) declining influence of behaviorism between approximately 1920 and 1970. Because such wide-scope claims about the development of America…
