    These findings provide insight into how the brain supports complex social behavior and, separately, purpose in life in at-risk aging. Affectionate social support may be a putative target process to enhance purpose in life in older adults.   • Chronic Stress from the Goiania 137 Cs Radiation Accident

    At the invitation of the Brazilian government, the authors conducted a multidisciplinary field study in Goiania, Brazil, 3 1/2 years after an accident involving 137Cs, a radioactive cesium isotope. They compared subjects exposed to low levels of ionizing radiation, subjects who experienced anticipatory stress from fear of radiation exposure, and a nonirradiated control group.     In the first part of this two-part article, published in Leonardo, Vol. 25, No. 1 (1992), the author reviewed the discovery of anamorphic projection in the late fifteenth century and traced its oblique relationship to problems of ‘subjective viewing’, semiotics and psychoanalytic theory.
