The Middle Class in Contemporary Russia: Indicators of Progressiveness and Innovativeness
This article examines the heterogeneity of the middle class in contemporary Russia, focusing on the dimensions of progressiveness and innovativeness. Using survey data from 3,000 urban middle-class respondents, the study develops multidomain indices to measure progressiveness and innovativeness across employment, consumption, financial behavior, and attitudes. The paper presents a study of the motivation for childbearing in contemporary Russia.Grounded theory techniques were used in the research; 80 biographical interviews were collected.The author gives an explication of «responsibility» as a category used by the respondents to conceptualize childbearing.It is institutions of health care that keep «responsibility» in the discoursive practices and direct reproductive motivation
