  • Language anxiety in EFL and ESL academic environments

Open Access•Kai Hao Chong, Jessica M Price et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Englishes•2025

Although past research has shown significant associations between language anxiety and different linguistic factors (i.e. language proficiency, self-perceived language competence, and frequency of language usage), so far, few studies have directly compared their interaction in foreign language vs second language speaking environments. This comparison is vital to understanding how local language experience, environment, and competence shape langua…

  • Conceptualisations and implications of ‘newness’ in education outside the classroom

Chris North, Allen Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Education•2023

Newness was a key theme identified in a comprehensive national study of education outside the classroom (EOTC) in Aotearoa New Zealand. This paper examines what newness means from the perspectives of students, educators and school leaders. Findings reveal that newness in EOTC was valued because of the difference to everyday routines, as well as to students’ learning and positive emotions; it also deepened students’ understanding of the wider worl…

  • Policy advisory committees in Kenya

    Open Access•David Irwin, Mercy Kyande•ARTICLE•International Review of Public…•2023•References: 9

Governments create advisory committees and arm’s-length agencies and then delegate responsibilities and powers, sometimes merely to provide policy advice but sometimes to implement regulation. Interest groups, and especially groups representing private businesses, are often appointed to such committees. As a result, they proactively seek appointment to policy advisory committees and boards established by government, believing that this offers one…

  • Interest group representation on government committees in Kenya

    Open Access•David Irwin, Mercy Kyande•ARTICLE•Interest Groups & Advocacy•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Business associations engage in dialogue with policy makers—and sometimes succeed in influencing policy outcomes. One strategy—largely overlooked by researchers—involves seeking appointment to government boards and committees. This is an important omission since many committees review, draft and implement policies and regulations. Securing representation on government committees could thus lead to considerable influence but little is known about …

  • External influence on parliamentarians in Kenya

    Open Access•David Irwin, Njeri Kiereini•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Affairs•2022•References: 9

Many scholars argue that the media can influence parliamentarians though the extent of that influence is hotly debated. There is some evidence that the relationship is two way, with politicians taking note of salient media stories but using the media to communicate with their constituents. It is also apparent that, whilst the media may have a role in drawing attention to specific issues, politicians in Kenya do not entirely trust it and thus use …

  • Media influence on public policy in Kenya

    Open Access•David Irwin, Njeri Kiereini•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Many scholars argue that the media can influence policymakers - determining the policy agenda, framing issues, prioritising issues and, on occasion, setting the policy as well. It could be, however, that skilled policymakers exploit the media, so that the media in fact reflects the issues that policymakers want debated. This then poses an important question of whether the media does indeed influence the public policy process. The topic of media i…

  • On the notion of abstraction in systemic functional linguistics

Open Access•Jamie Williams, Noah Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Functional Linguistics•2017

This article provides an in-depth analysis of the theoretical dimensions of stratification, instantiation, and delicacy within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It does so by examining the nature of the concept of ‘abstraction’ with respect to these terms. The claim is that, although the same term is used in each case, the precise meaning of abstraction differs depending on the theoretical focus. This conclusion is reached by examining three…

  • The influence of business associations on legislation

    Open Access•David Irwin, Mary Githinji•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Affairs•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Interest groups seek to influence public policy. Business associations specifically seek to influence policy related to the environment in which their members operate, with the intention of making it easier for the members, and the wider private sector, to “do business.” Scholars question whether interest groups are influential and, if so, the degree to which their activity influences public policy. Even if they do influence public policy at the …

  • Kenya’s Business Networks

    Open Access•David Irwin•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2015

It has been suggested that business leaders—insofar as they are able to exert influence over public policy—do so through their personal networks rather than acting through, or on behalf of, wider groups of businesses. The purpose of this article is to explore the extent to which personal networks in Kenya give business leaders easy access to policy makers. The concern is that a few business leaders may be able to influence public policy, for good…

  • Business associations in Kenya

    Open Access•David Irwin, Mary Githinji•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Affairs•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Governments create the political and economic environment in which their countries' businesses operate, usually described as the ‘enabling environment’ or ‘investment climate’. In response, business associations seek to influence public policy to make it easier for their members to “do business”. Scholars suggest that interest groups are able to form lasting relationships with governments based on a resource exchange mechanism. This paper suggest…

Living sustainable lifestyles that meet the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs has become a driving force for social change. Music festivals are contextualized within this setting and can provide both a site to encourage environmentally responsible behaviours and a place for communities of likeminded people to meet. A sense of community and freedom, efficient festival organizati…
