  • Macroeconomics of greening Turkish agriculture

A Erinç Yeldan, Ulaş Karakoç•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast European and…•2026

With the aid of an applied general equilibrium model, we study the macroeconomic effects of various policy alternatives to stimulate the implications of the greening of Turkish agriculture. Our results suggest that the reduction in chemicals, including synthetic fertilizers, and fossil oil combustion at alternative rates of 30% and 50% would significantly reduce carbon emissions, but at the expense of adverse effects on agricultural output. In re…

  • A reassessment of industrial growth in interwar Turkey through first-generation sectoral estimates

    Ulaş Karakoç•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2023•References: 21

This study presents the first sectorally disaggregated estimates of the industrial output growth for Turkey between World War I and II. These estimates indicate that at the aggregate level the existing official index overestimates the output growth. Secondly, the sectoral disaggregation shows that the industrial growth was balanced, as both textiles and food-processing branches, which comprised most of the value-added, grew significantly. Local i…

  • Regional inequalities and the West-East divide in Turkey since 1913

Open Access•Güneş Aşık, Ulaş Karakoç et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 55

This paper examines the evolution of regional disparities within the present-day borders of Turkey since 1913. Based on our estimates for 58 provinces, we findβ-convergence, an inverse U, and more recently, the beginnings of an N-shaped pattern for value added per capita. We also find that regional disparities in Turkey exhibit a number of special features that do not easily fit the well-studied pattern of the early industrializers. First, while …

  • Overcoming the Egyptian cotton crisis in the interwar period

    Open Access•Laura Panza, Ulaş Karakoç•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 33

After experiencing a period of spectacular growth during the late nineteenth century, the Egyptian cotton sector underwent a phase of stagnation, which was followed by a gradual and steady increase in output during the interwar period. Drawing on a new panel dataset at the province-year level, this article explores the determinants of the upturn in cotton output, running a horserace between credit, seed technology, and infrastructure. In order to…

  • Industrialization in Egypt and Turkey, 1870–2010

Open Access•Ulaş Karakoç, Sevket Pamuk et al.•CHAPTER•Spread of Modern Industry to the…•2017

This chapter examines the industrial performance of Egypt and Turkey during four periods: 1870 to the First World War under open economy conditions; the inter-war era when industrialization began with the help of protection; the decades after the Second World War when the import-substituting industrialization model was adopted and rates of industrialization peaked; and trade liberalization since 1980. Per capita incomes were similar in Egypt and …
