Anti-Semitism v.s. Jewish Identity in the Book of Esther
In the book of Esther, we find a classic example of anti-Semitic politics and propaganda, when Haman incites the Persian king to exterminate all the Jews of the empire because they are different. The book of Esther was often viewed as a historical novel far removed from reality. However, research in the second half of the 20th century, when the archives of the fortifications and the archives of the treasury of Persepolis were published, as well a…
Phoenician Philosophy and Greek Atomism
A fragment has come down to us from the Stoic Posidonius, where it is said that the Phoenicians, in particular Mochos from Sidon, developed atomic philosophy even before the time of the Trojan War. Modern scientists, for the most part, are extremely skeptical about this evidence and do not recognize any developed philosophical culture among the Phoenician ethnos. In our article, we try to refute this point of view by showing that, having a very d…
The Representation of Jewish Identity in On Sleep by Clearchus of Soli
The dialogue On Sleep by Clearchus of Soli is the first extant work depicting a personal meeting between a representative of the Jewish people and an ancient Greek. The character Aristotle is surprised by the deeds and words of a wise Jew. In fr. 6 Wehrli, Aristotle says that the wise Jew was a Hellenic not only in his language, but also in his soul. In fr. 7 Wehrli, we are told about a certain magician whom Aristotle met and who extracts the sou…
Gorgias' Rhetorical Subject Between Logos, Phenomenon, and Being
The article attempts to reconstruct Gorgias’ theory of logos. It is shown that the logos, hiding reality, produces infinite existential possibilities in the consciousness of the subject, connected not with truth, but with doxa. The article also suggests that Gorgias, unlike Parmenides, limited the use of the logos only to this world. In our world, the phenomena of consciousness, qualia, all perceptual acts are somehow linguistically encoded. When…
Discussing various aspects of erotic ethno-geographies of the Greek city-states

London; New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2018. Рр. VI, 150. ISBN 978-1-138-74176-8
The doctrine of Eros in the Early Stoicism
Eros as power and desire has been traditionally considered by the Stoics within the doctrine of “things indifferent” (adiaphora). At the same time, the power of Eros and the factor of gender differences play a pivotal role not only in the Stoic cosmology but in the theory of education and in the social theory as well. The political philosophy of the early Stoics is also deeply rooted in the theory of Eros. The article is devoted to explaining of …
The Religious beliefs of Critias the Sophist
Sextus Empiricus (Adv. Math. IX. 54. = B 25 DK) has preserved a fragment of a work attributed to the sophist and tyrant Critias. This fragment has long been considered a manifesto not only of atheism but also, perhaps, the first text in which religion is a purely political matter and the work of men's hands. Nevertheless, this text is still very problematic, because, taking into account the evidence of the primary sources, there is no real reason…
