Focus Attracts Attachment
There is growing evidence that pitch accents as well as prosodic boundaries can affect syntactic attachment. But is this an effect of their perceptual salience (the Salience Hypothesis), or is it because accents mark the position of focus (the Focus Attraction Hypothesis)? A pair of auditory comprehension experiments shows that focus position, as indicated by preceding wh-questions instead of by pitch accents, affects attachment by drawing the am…
How focus particles and accents affect attachment
This project shows that focus and information structure, as indicated by the focus particle “only” and pitch accents, influence syntactic attachment, in contrast to the well-known effects of prosodic boundaries on attachment. One written questionnaire, one completion study, and several auditory questionnaires show that the position of “only” strongly affects attachment preferences in ambiguous sentences, while contrastive pitch accents have small…
The Strange Case of Ermine de Reims. A Medieval Woman Between Demons and Saints
In 1997, Claude Arnaud-Gillet published an edition of a late-fourteenth-century devotional, if controversial, text, Les Visions d’Ermine de Reims. This was read for the first time in 2000 by the author of this book, Professor of French at Pittsburgh, who had written extensively on the lives of later medieval French women. Ermine’s Visions affectedly her deeply; she discussed the text briefly in her 2006 work, Poets, Saints and Visionaries of the …

A two-source hypothesis for Gapping
Les justices locales et les justiciables
In August 1566, Guy Chabot seigneur de Jarnac, governor of La Rochelle, assembled a force to arrest the murderer of his brother Sainte-Foy at Ruffec. This he managed to do, and the prisoner was transferred to Angoulême. Jarnac, though, asked for new judges to be appointed since he had no faith in those at Angoulême. A year later, the accused was still in prison, this time in Poitiers. Jarnac had not pursued the course of feud in an era in which t…
Des guerres en Italie avant les Guerres d’Italie
The antecedents of the French invasion of Italy in 1494 have long been known but why were French princes involved in Italy in the decades around 1400? The immediate cause was the implosion of the Angevin dynasty of Naples and Provence, a spectacularly violent and turbulent one, riven by furious rivalries between its Hungarian, Tarento and Durazzo branches. The childless Queen Giovanna I, having chosen as her heir Charles of Durazzo, a cousin and …
The letters of Francis I
This article aims to do a number of things: in the year of the 500th anniversary of Francis I’s accession it asks why there is as yet no project for a systematic edition of his letters and how this might be achieved. It goes on to examine the cultural context of the king’s letter-writing and then to examine the extent of his personal participation in the composition of the many letters sent out in his name. Finally, it examines his more personal …

Remarks on "Gapping" in DP
We argue that the gapping-like constructions in the nominal domain (nominal gapping: NG) and regular gapping constructions seen in clauses (verbal gapping: VG) show quite different properties. First, VG obeys the Coordination Constraint but NG does not. Second, in terms of locality, NG allows free embedding but VG does not. Third, the scope properties exhibited in VG are not seen in NG. Fourth, socalled cross-conjunct binding, which is sometimes …
A Sibling Precedence Approach to the Linearization of Multiple Dominance Structures
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:A current trend in syntactic theory explores of the use of multiple dominance struc-tures in the analysis of right-node raising and across-the-board movement, as well as in the formal description of movement. One effect of the introduction of multiple dominance structures is the complication of the mapping of syntactic structure to strings of terminals, as the multiply dominated element has syntacti…
Equative and Predicational Copulas in Thai
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt:In this paper we report on an experimental study of the copula system in Thai. We argue that the Thai copula system is crucial to the debate over whether specifica-tional sentences should be given an inverse predicational analysis or an equative analysis. We conclude that Thai data supports the equative approach. The paper is organized as follows. We first introduce the inverse and equative analyses…
Measuring Ethnicity in New Zealand
While single ethnic group disparity studies have been useful in the past, we suggest that more sophisticated ways of conceptualising and analysing ethnicity data in relation to health disparities are now required in New Zealand. Based on the New Zealand experience, we also suggest that as international migration continues, and as intermarriage becomes more frequent in most countries, there will be pressure to move from single group race-based mea…
How Attention Partitions Itself During Simultaneous Message Presentations
Television producers, across all types of programming, assume young viewers can parallel process simultaneously presented messages. For instance, television news producers appear to believe that young viewers can attend to weather icons, lexical news crawls, and sports scores while they also attend to news anchors who present the news. Nonetheless, attention theory suggests parallel processing on this scale cannot be executed efficiently. Given t…

Human growth hormone and the temptations of biomedical enhancement
It is likely that humans have sought enhancements for themselves or their children for as long as they have recognised that improvements in individuals are a possibility. One genre of self-improvement in modern society can be called 'biomedical enhancements'. These include drugs, surgery and other medical interventions aimed at improving the mind, body or performance. This paper uses the case of human growth hormone (hGH) to examine the social na…
From Hyperactive Children to ADHD Adults
Medicalization is, by definition, about the extension of medical boundaries. Analogous to "domain expansion," extant medicalized categories can expand to become broader and more inclusive. This paper examines the emergence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults. ADHD, commonly known as Hyperactivity, became established in the 1970s as a diagnosis for children; it expanded first to include "adult hyperactives" and, in the 199…
Preelection Polls and Issue Knowledge in the 1996 U.S. Presidential Election
Many media leaders and some survey researchers in the United States have begun to question whether preelection polls to determine the relative standings of candidates have any useful purpose. Some even say that such polls harm the democratic process. Their arguments follow an attention-displacement model in which public attention paid to polls reduces the amount of attention available for substantive issues. The counterargument proposes a catalyt…

French Intrigue in Ireland during the Reign of Henri II, 1547–1559
the years around 1550 were crucial to the relations between the British Isles and the Continent, because of two major unsolved problems: the dispute between France and England over the remaining English possessions on the European mainland, and the clash of English and French interests in Scotland.1 However, it should not be forgotten that Ireland, too, played its part in this political storm and became the object of French and Scottish intrigue.…
