  • Public and Private Antitrust Enforcement for Cartels

Open Access•Yannis Katsoulacos, Evgenia Motchenkova et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Economia Contemporânea•2019•References: 12

We review recent theoretical literature pointing to the ineffectiveness, in terms of welfare impact, of currently applied sanctioning regimes for cartels by Competition Authorities (CAs). We then provide a comparison of the regimes taking also into account criteria related to ease of implementation and transparency. We argue the case for switching to a penalty regime, in which the penalty base continues to be the currently dominant penalty base o…

  • The Economics of Antitrust Sanctioning

Yannis Katsoulacos, Eleanor M Fox et al.•BOOK•Competition Policy for the New Era•2018

In this chapter, we first discuss the empirical evidence on cartel formation that is particularly worrying in recent years for the case of BRICS and developing countries and the traditional economic theory on deterrence as applied to sanctioning policies. We evaluate the available empirical evidence and discuss the reasons why cartels are still very active, despite the significant increase in the fines imposed, the application of leniency program…

  • The Distortive Effects of Antitrust Fines Based on Revenue

    Open Access•Vasiliki Bageri, Yannis Katsoulacos et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 7

In most jurisdictions, antitrust fines are based on affected commerce rather than on collusive profits, and in some others, caps on fines are introduced based on total firm sales rather than on affected commerce. We uncover a number of distortions that these policies generate, propose simple models to characterize their comparative static properties, and quantify them with simulations based on market data. We conclude by discussing the obvious ne…

  • The Economic Theory of Product Differentiation

Martin Slater, John Beath et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•1992

There are few industries in modern market economies that do not manufacture differentiated products. This book provides a systematic explanation and analysis of the widespread prevalence of this important category of products. The authors concentrate on models in which product selection is endogenous. In the first four chapters they consider models that try to predict the level of product differentiation that would emerge in situations of market …
