Assessing content validity of learner milestones for decolonial global health education
The field of global health is rooted in colonialism, and many global health partnerships perpetuate colonial power dynamics. To change this, knowledge and praxis in decoloniality must become a fundamental part of global health education and practice. Since there are no current tools in global health education specifically focusing on decolonial praxis, we drew on existing literature to develop a tool designed to measure a learner clinician’s prog…
Colonisation and its aftermath
Coloniality in global health manifests as systemic inequalities, not based on merit, that benefit one group at the expense of another. Global surgery seeks to advance equity by inserting surgery into the global health agenda; however, it inherits the biases in global health. As a diverse group of global surgery practitioners, we aimed to examine inequities in global surgery. Using a structured, iterative, group Delphi consensus-building process d…
Equitable access to quality trauma systems in low-income and middle-income countries
Injuries in low-income and middle-income countries are prevalent and their number is expected to increase. Death and disability after injury can be reduced if people reach healthcare facilities in a timely manner. Knowledge of barriers to access to quality injury care is necessary to intervene to improve outcomes. We combined a four-delay framework with WHO Building Blocks and Institution of Medicine Quality Outcomes Frameworks to describe barrie…
Voices beyond the Operating Room
This study was designed to examine the effect of calcitonin gene related peptide on gastric acid secretion in the rat. Calcitonin gene related peptide (1 pmol-1 nmol/rat) injected intravenously inhibited basal gastric acid secretion in awake, freely moving rats. Calcitonin gene related peptide decreased gastric secretion stimulated by histamine, pentagastrin, or bethanecol in anaesthetised rats. The inhibitory effect was immediate and most pronou…
The true costs of cesarean delivery for patients in rural Rwanda
Introduction While it is recognized that there are costs associated with postoperative patient follow-up, risk assessments of catastrophic health expenditures (CHEs) due to surgery in sub-Saharan Africa rarely include expenses after discharge. We describe patient-level costs for cesarean section (c-section) and follow-up care up to postoperative day (POD) 30 and evaluate the contribution of follow-up to CHEs in rural Rwanda. Methods We interviewe…
